Exclamation Borked after system update! (and solutions are not helping!) - 02-07-2010, 10:43 PM

I have a mini 10v with SL installed. I have a 2 partition HD, one side is SL and the other side is unused right now and was formatted in FAT32 for install of Windows XP which I never got around to doing.

My install was perfectly fine until I accidentally did a system update today and now it is cycling with booting then restarting.

1. I cannot load into safe mode
2. I also cannot load into single user or verbose mode
3. I don't have my flash drive with my CD install and NBI on it but I can make a new one

Am I right in thinking that the first step is to make a new bootable USB key and try to run NBI?

Then if that doesn't work then connect my HDD to another computer and back up my files then reinstall the OSX?

Yes. Try running the latest version of NBI.

No need to reinstall. You have most likely updated to 10.6.2 without taking proper precautions. 10.6.2 removed official support for the Intel Atom CPU in the 10v. NBI 0.8.3RC4 and newer patch it back in (actually the bootloader NBI installs does). For that reason, you MUST run the newer NBI before and after updating to 10.6.2. Since you apparently didn't do that, you need to prepare an NBI USB drive, use it (or NetbookCD alternatively) to boot your HDD installation of OS X, then install and run NBI 0.8.3 final once back into OS X.

I made two new USB keys using the Windows method, one with OSX on it and the other with the NBI.

When I use just the NBI on its own I get a Kernel panic telling me:

panic(Cpu0Caller 0x2a86f7): "Version mis-match between Kernel and CPU PM"
@SourceCache/knu/xnu-1486.2.11/osfmk/i386/pmcpu.c:68

then it gives me:

Mac OS version: not yet set.

I then tried to run the NBI with the OSX usb and it gives me the 3 options:
OSX (my install)
WIN (my blank FAT partition I never put windows on)
OSX install CD

When I click on the install CD (which is the USB key) it goes to the grey apple screen then the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again." comes up.

Over and over and over and over...

And I see two different versions of the bootloader, the old one that I installed when I put OSX in there and then a nicer looking, new version. :/

I am worried I really messed this up!

I don't know if this makes a difference, but you should try to boot the USB SL/NBI drive from the Dell BIOS as opposed to Chameleon.

What happens when you choose your install of OS X from the menu? Also, you might try the NBI 0.8.3RC5 image. Some have better lcuk with it that with the final 0.8.3 image. Also, if you have access to an external CD/DVD drive, try NetbookCD.

1. When I choose the OS from the menu, it gives me a blank grey screen and flashes a line like text___ text___ text___ but i can't see what it says then it restarts.. This keeps happening.

2. Booting from the DellBios gives me the black screen message that there is no OS installed.

2. Could someone give me an image of the NBI 0.8.3RC5? The backup computer I am on keeps telling me it can't unzip most of it as the folder and filenames make it too long!

ARGH! lol

Thumbs down Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!! - 02-09-2010, 01:17 AM

Update:

I have used ALL 3 of the windows method to make a small USB key with Netbook Installer on it and it is not working.

When I have the two USB's in there, it runs off them and gives me the three options:
1. Boot into the OSX in the HDD
2. Boot into the blank partition that was supposed to be for windows
3. Boot from the USB key to the OSX install CD

What happens:
1. Booting into the OSX on the HDD is useless in regular mode, safe mode, single user mode or verbose mode. It just stalls on a grey screen, flashes a line about something I can't see and then restarts. This happens EVERYTIME.

2. Booting into the blank partition obviously gives me a message of "no OS installed".

3. Trying to boot into the USB key with the OSX install CD on it is useless as well. It looks like its going to do something, giving me a blank grey screen, then an apple and what looks like a normal boot then a big message comes up telling me I need to restart my computer. This happens EVERYTIME.

I am using the NBI 083F.

I am unable to figure out how to use NBI 083 RC5.

Is there anyone that can figure out what options I have left?!

What happened originally:

If you didn't see the first post, I went to install a system update for my iTunes, QuickTime and whatever else and I must have updated the OS without preparing for it with NBI. I was told to reuse NBI to patch it...

Using NBI flash drive on its own:
boot0: error

Try NetbookCD if you can.

I don't have access to an external drive and it doesn't work when put on a USB key

I can try and redo my flash drive via a mac on the weekend. If that doesn't work it seems that I'm screwed.
