Default No Write access permission after SL install - 02-01-2010, 10:49 AM

Hi,

Newbie here with a Dell Mini, I'm afraid.

I've followed the guides and got everything installed and updated to 10.6.2 (including running NBI to get my sound back ). I used a retail version of 10.6 that I bought.

What I have noticed though is that I have no Write access to the hard drive, so I either can't copy anything, say from a memory key, or duplicate files on the hard drive, make new folders etc.

It seems that I only have "Read-Only" permissions (according to the Get Info of the hard drive icon).

This obviously makes it difficult to really do anything constructive on the machine, other than show my work colleagues "Look at what I've nearly got working"

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm going to try another install and see if that helps.

EDIT Just done another re-install and I have the same problem. Whatever is going on?

Many thanks,

Face

To amplify the above: Go to Applications > Utilities. Find and run Disk Utility.app That should let you modify and/or repair the HDD permissions.

Hi Guys,

Thank you both for your replies.

I have run the Repair Permissions, but this didn't help at all.

I done some more searching and I've found another thread regarding exactly the same issue.

This issue seem to affect at least SL installs. On a real Mac this issue doesn't happen (you can create folders, make aliases etc on the top level of the drive) - but it is a problem on 10v models at least.

Try this and you'll see what I mean:

Double-click your hard drive icon on the desktop - this should open up a window where you can see the System, Library, Applications and User folders. Now, right-click in this window and there will be NO option to create a New Folder. Also, go up to the File menu and there will be lots of greyed-out options (New Folder, Duplicate, Make Alias etc) - this is because you have no write-permissions to this level of the drive. This does not happen on a real Mac. In fact, if you do a Get Info on the icon of your hard drive, and look at the Sharing & Permissions section, you will see that "You can only read".

I PM'd the OP in the other thread to see if he has had any further success.

Thanks again,

Face

I'm not sure what the "You can only read" message means. I get it but below it says Read & Write -- and I have no problem opening folders, creating new files, etc. Works just like my MacBook with OS X 10.6.2

Are you sure you are logged on correctly, with Admin privileges?

What drive format do Disk Utility and "Get Info" show?

Phil

hi back,

okay now i know what you mean.

Try this:

navigate to the folder you want have write permissions.

right click on it and choose information.

than on the left hand it will pop up a window. scroll to the bottom, there you will see a lock, click it and type in your password.

now youre in the postion to change the write permissions for this folder on the left bottom of the window.

I hope you can follow my terrible english, but that would work for you.

Hello again,

@w7ox - when you install the OS, the first account you create, by default, is an Admin account. I can read/write everywhere else so far, just not able to create any new folders, duplicate files directly in the window where you see the System, Library, Applications, Users folders - everywhere else is fine. Where YOU see the "You can only read" message, below that where you can see "Read & Write" - is that only next to System and Wheel with Read Only next to Everyone?

@chrispi79 - I have manually changed the permissions and this works. However, you shouldn't (and don't have to do this on a real Mac - I've never had this problem on either my Mac Pro or MacBook Pro).

Thanks again,

Matt

I'm having the same problems. I do not have read/write permissions for my files. I've tried running the permissions repair in the disk utility. I've tried MANY times unlocking folders and adding Admin read/write and added myself to the permissions ...locking and unlocking with my password etc.

Even though my folders now say that I have read/write permissions on the folders I still can't save any text edit or copy and paste anything.

Any suggestions?
