Default OSX installation problems on mini 10v - 01-29-2010, 03:57 AM

I have a Dell mini 10v with an ao3 bios that I am trying to I stall snow leopard using the mechdrew method with any mac. I successfully loaded osx onto the USB with netbook installer. I booted up the mini and continued through the welcome screen. I went to utility and only the USB drive was showing, not giving me an option to select the internal drive to partiton. I tried a few different reboots but still cannot continue. Any guidance would be appreciated. I am using a retail snow leopard upgrade disk and a San disk cruzer USB.
Thanks
bill

Hi Bill,

I have exactly the same problem during the installation procedure. No hard disk on "Disk Utility" just ony the USB disk. I've tried it so many time. I have installed Windows7, may cause any problems. Can anyone give a hint on this problem ?

Thanks

Alex

Hi you,

you have to select disc utilities on the top, then you have to format the disc and after that, you can choose the disc in the installer.

Good Luck

Sorry, Alex you didnt find it in Disc utilities? perhaps its formatted as exfat?
Im not sure if osx can see it as it is exfat

Exactly ! No disk on disk utility. Bill is also saying the same thing. During Windows7 installation the disk partitioned in 2 volumes and formatted using NTFS. But as far as I know NTFS is accessible from OSX. Do you suggest to re-partition the disk using Mac File System ? And try again ?

yes you have to partition to mac os extended journaled filesystem. i thought thats clear.

osx just can read ntfs, not write.

Good luck

did select disk utilities on top and only the USB drive was visible at that point. I could not format to mac because the drive of the mini does not appear in disk utilities from the install.

Also, how could I reformat to mac while running windows to try again? That doesn't seem possible. I think you were maybe referring to the initial format of the USB drive prior to putting osx install on it in which case it was done.

I'm having this same issue. My Mini 10V came pre-installed with WIN XP. When I boot up from the USB drive I can't find the HD in disk utilities, only the USB is visible.
Did anyone find a solution to this ?

Guys,
I followed the Mechdrew guide (NetbookInstaller 2: USB Mac Installation via Any Operating System | Guides | OS X | mechdrew) to Install on a 10v with windows XP, because I didnt have a MAC available to myself or could I do dual booting.

When I went to do the partition the drive according to his guide I couldnt because the 2 drives were "greyed out", I am not sure if this is the same issue you are having but this is how I fixed it: (Mac OS X: Disk Utility - All options dimmed for a disk that was formatted as NTFS in Microsoft Windows XP)
  1. Start from your Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Install disc.
  2. Chose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
  3. Select the drive with the issue on the left side of the Disk Utility window.
  4. Choose Get Info from the File menu.
  5. Note the information listed under "Disk Identifier".
  6. Close the Information window and quit Disk Utility.
  7. Choose Terminal from the Utilities menu.
  8. Type:

diskutil partitiondisk [DiskIdentifier] JHFS+ newdisk 100%

Note: Replace "[DiskIdentifier]" with the information gathered in step 5.
  9. Press Return.
  10. Wait for the command to complete, then quit Terminal.
  11. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and make the desired changes.
Please note this will only create a single partition as in the Mechdrew guide as noted.

I hope this helps...

Unfortunately there is only the USB drive available in the disk utility, and no other drive visible, so this isn't going to help.
Incredibly frustrating considering all of the other folks who've had such great results

Exactly, just only the USB drive is available in the disk utility. I've erased the NTFS partitions that Windows7 created but nothing at all. No disk available on DISK UTILITY. Now the Dell mini10V is EMPTY, and I'm trying to find a solution with the Hackintos Installation or I have to install Win7 again to bring it back to "life"
