Gah, I need to learn to read closer.

Perhaps something is faulty with this mini. If not, you could maybe try upgrading to A06 and see if you get anywhere from there.

Really long shot. Try turning off bluetooth in the bios. I was having trouble with hanging like that. I turned off bluetooth and it seemed to respond better. Think I remembered seeing a list of bios settings somewhere and bluetooth was one of the things to turn off.
Also, if you can get it booted up off a USB stick, you need to format your internal disk from from scratch. I had a problem with a corrupted partition table that kept me from booting. Formatting the drive really helped.

If it's not broke, take it apart and see how it works

still struggling away this end - tried upgrading back to BIOS A06 and have resorted to dell customer support. Still not convinced them there is anything wrong though! I'll keep you posted

thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming!

Be absolutely certain this is true. If you set it so, but do not save & exit after, it will not be set that way.

When you try to boot do you get the Dell start up screen where you have the option of hitting F2 or F12?

Hi Phil,

Yes USB Legacy Support is definitely enabled and yes I also get the dell start up screen. I then have this strange situation where the NBI either freezes or causes a kernel panic. I have also established that I can't boot using the DOS A04 BIOS downloader or using a ubuntu or xp cd-rom.

any other ideas? Thanks for the suggestions...

Sounds very strange to me too... Not having much experience with the mini, but I would suggest trying to take out the hard drive and do a low level format on another machine and/or run some kind of diagnostics.
Another possibility is to swap the drives with your wife's mini and try to do the installation there...
Since you also have the problem of not being able to boot from the usb drives, you may take a look in the BIOS on the boot devices tab to see if everything is in order... Other then that - maybe try to remove the BIOS battery (don't know if it is possible at all?) in order to reset the thing...

Hope some of this would help...

Greets,
Boyan

ok just to give you guys an update - I eventually gave up trying to boot my machine, took the hard drive out - put it in a usb enclosure, connected it to my wife's mini 10v and reformatted and installed from there.

I'm happy to report it is now working a treat and I'm posting happily from safari on my new machine.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.
