Question Do I need to reinstall XP before I send mine back for repair? - 01-13-2010, 10:34 PM

My screen was flickering this afternoon.
And finally it is dead. I can't see anything on my screen.
I chatted with Dell support, and he asked me first that I am running on XP.
I said yes but actually as you know I am running on OSX SL.
I am pretty sure this is a hardware problem like backlight failure.

My question is "Do I need to reinstall XP and send it back for the repair?"
If I need to then "How I can reinstall it?"
Installing different OS is "void" warrenty?

Thanks in advance.

I would reinstall / format the drive if I were you - if you are sending the laptop back you cannot guarantee that your data will be safe, even if you don't think there is anything important there. You also might not get the same laptop back...

You are going to need an external monitor in order to see whats going on.
If you want to put XP back on, an external DVD/CD drive as well, to use the recovery disk. Otherwise, boot from your USB OSX stick and use disk utility to wipe things.

about your screen.

I would ring Dell and ask the question if it's okay to send it back running OSX. Explain it's obviously a hardware issue and not software related. If they say no then at least you know what to do. Backup your user folder first though. Also take the help desk persons name if they say it's don't want any confusion once they receive it.
