Default I think my Dad installed 10.6.2 on his Dell Mini 10v. Won't boot anymore! - 01-09-2010, 05:40 PM

I suspect my Dad run the software update and installed 10.6.2 on his Dell Mini 10v. I can't get very clear information from him, apparently iTunes kicked in (he never used iTunes before), then there were some software updates going on, he clicked "I agree" at least 2x, and entered the admins password (I kick myself in the butt for giving him the password) and I suspect he installed 10.6.2

Apparently there were 5 items he installed.

Now what happens the Dell Mini 10.v just hangs at the boot up screen, and then it reboots and reboots and never makes it to 10.6.1 or 10.6.2

Is this symptom consistent with 10.6.2 installation?

of course he's in Romania and there is no one around that knows how to troubleshoot a Mac, let alone a Hackintosh.

or something else is going on?

Thanks

Yes, that sounds like he installed 10.6.2 without running NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC4 or newer before and after the update. It is easy to fix by booting from either a flash drive with a bootable NBI 0.8.3 final image on it (see here) or the latest NetbookCD with the same (see here). Once into OS X, he should download and run NBI 0.8.3 final.

Default Thanks! - 01-09-2010, 11:15 PM

Thanks, I need to bring myself up to day with the latest patches and somehow send him a USB stick and have him run it. I thought he had to send the laptop back to me for repair. you gave me some hope

OK, I saw those install methods, but he already has 10.6.1 or 10.6.2 in there. I only need the patch. Can I run the patch from a USB stick? do I need an OS on that USB Stick?

if you can get him to use the -x to boot in single user mode, then he can run the NBI0.8.3 from a usb stick and fix his boot problem.

You can write this image to your USB and then boot from it, then you can boot into your SL, install NBI 0.8.3 Final and restart http://osx.mechdrew.com/downloads/NBI_083F.img

Thanks, will send instructions and see how it goes.

To boot into single user mode, on Apple you hold down Command and then S, here what does "-x" mean?

he did that, he write this image to a memory stick using a Windows Application mention in this forum (http://launchpad.net/win32-image-wri...-r23-win32.zip) and now when he tries to boot from the USB stick he gets an error message about a wrong (or incompatible) kernel version.

HELP!

Thanks
BTW: the laptop is at my brother-in-law in Romania and reports are coming in slowly and are very sketchy at best.

Make sure he is really booting the USB drive (i.e. press F12 at the Dell screen then choose USB).

Thanks, will make sure I explain again how to boot from the USB stick.

I was afraid that that USB stick is not bootable, but apparently it is, right?

It should be, but it is hard to tell at this point whether it is. Ask them to try booting it via F12|USB then report back what happens in as much detail as possible (if it does not work).
