How to Update from 10.6.0 to 10.6.2 1. Download and install the 10.6.1 update here: http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/np...XUpd10.6.1.dmg 2. Restart 3. Download and Install using deafult setting the NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC5 . The RC5 is very important because right now the final release of 0.8.3 is now 100% successful all the time. Get NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC5 here: NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC5.app.zip - netbook-installer - NetbokInstaller 0.8.3 RC5 (alpha) - Project Hosting on Google Code 4. Run the Apple Software Update and select the 10.6.2 update (it will tell you that it needs to automatically restart) This is fine. 5. After it has restarted, run the NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC5 again using the same default settings. 6. Restart Again! 7. Once restarted your 10v should now be working with 10.6.2 To Update 10.6.1 to 10.6.2 Follow the steps above from step 3. In any case, the key is to run NBI 0.8.3 before updating and again afterwards (after the restart). I am not aware of any reason to use RC5 instead of the final version of 0.8.3. |

I've been running 10.6.2 since it was discovered that you could boot it using the 10.6.1 kernel (though I'm now using the NBI method of course). I've never had any problems with kernel panics are compatability. I received my 80GB X25-M this morning and set up 10.6.2 first time with absolutely no problems using NBI and NBBM. In short... go ahead and do it! I run it on a powerbook and I don't recall there being anything so great in the updates that would cause me to even bother with the interruption. Or is this just a case of preferring to have the latest version of the OS - nothing wrong with that of course. I found these release notes for 10.6.2: About the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update and these for 10.6.1: About the Mac OS X v10.6.1 Update . Both of these sound like they have almost zero impact on a dell mini hackintosh. Thoughts? Edit: Oh, btw, thanks for posting your notes on how to do it, it's good to know it's so approachable. And to help clarify the 10.6.2 issues, the biggest pain I heard from people was sound not working. That seemed to be from people with A06 BIOS or who didn't run NBI before and after. OH WHAT A FOOL I AM!...I blame fatigue...nothing to do with impatience or arrogance...oh no....ope someone can help me. Right then: I've got a 3g dongle! OUCH! I hear you say....Seems like it might work but I need 10.6.2. HERE MY MISTAKE: I used NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC3 and not RC5 to upgrade and now it won't boot (I'm guesting that is probably the cause). It loads up the progress bar, fails, and then tries again and again and again...you get the idea. OK I thought. I'll just try and boot up off the external HD with the original OS X image on it and restore it back to 10.6.0 or just wipe it clean and start from scatch. HERE IS THE PROBLEM: It won't let me. Even when I prioritize USB and removerable devices above the internal hard drive to boot from in the bios set up. If anyone could help with a quick fix; like FORCING it to boot up off the external HD or how to wipe it and start again or an even better solution (I'm sure the is one) for my tired head I would be VERY appreciative!! In case I do have to start again I'm gonna make a RC5ed boot image in the mean time. Still got to get that dongle working once I get 10.6.2 up and running....good times. Bios A04 |
