Default Whats Your 10v OS X boot time? - 01-03-2010, 07:06 PM

So I was wanting to know everyones start-up and shut-down times for their Dell Mini 10v Hackintosh's for comparison purposes.

So if anyone wants to reply please answer with:

1.Start-up time (from pressing power to having Wifi working etc)

2. Shut-down time (from pressing shut down to having the power indicator light go off).

3. Also include things like: how many times the pinwheel at the grey apple screen spins.

4. If possible please include your Hardware specs / Software Version etc. / and your BIOS settings.

Here are mine:

Start-up: 1:18

Shut-down: 0:04

Pinwheel Spins: average 46

Hardware specs etc are in my sig.

Video of my boot time time:

Thanks.

I think you guys have your standards a bit off.

Anyway, there is already a thread on this. The boot time varies, even with identical equipment, software, drives, etc, etc, etc.

Just be happy it boots and runs at all.

But, by all means, post away.

My shut-down is faster.

But, your start-up is faster especially your pinwheel (wow it's way better!)

what are your bios settings, like what's enabled and what's disabled?

Thanks for the response!

Note that (at least according to his sig) he is still running 10.5.8. That probably explains the difference. I have not measured them, but I would guess my 10.6.2 times are close to yours.

1:25 to start and 2s to shut down. Too slow, isn't it ?
I use 10.6.2 and RC5. I believe it was a little faster to start when I used RC4.

I haven't timed it, but I'd say mine is in line with the above mentioned times.
I typically just leave it on and shut the lid to put it to sleep.

Hard drive or SSD would make the biggest difference, as would a fragmented hard disk.

Clearly I have nothing better to do with my time, I'm on a business trip to CES, and was bored in my hotel room.

I upgraded to an SSD today, so was in the fortunate position to be able to do a side by side comparison with the stock HDD. First I tested with the SSD, then the HDD. It occurred to me that I had previously done a verbose boot and noticed that VMware Fusion was waiting for something during boot, so I uninstalled it on the HDD image and tried again. Finally I put the SSD back in the mini and timed the boot again to see how repeatable the results were.

Overall, the SSD does make boot up quicker, but not massively. It really comes into it's own when running and especially launching apps, which are just snappier now.

I usually don't shut down, preferring to sleep the system by closing the lid. I hope that boot times can be reduced though, but I don't think it's a top priority for Meklort, and he's the guy that most of us are relying on for our Hackintosh tools.

Test results are...

SSD (X25-M 80GB)
Shutdown: 4s
Startup Time: 1m 27s
Startup Wheel Spins: 57

HDD (Stock 160GB)
Shutdown: 4s
Startup Time: 1m 45s
Startup Wheel Spins: 63

HDD (Stock 160GB) with VMware Fusion 3.01 uninstalled
Shutdown: 4s
Startup Time: 1m 38s
Startup Wheel Spins: 58

SSD (X25-M 80GB) Second Run
Shutdown: 4s
Startup Time: 1m 23s
Startup Wheel Spins: 55
