Default Can't connect to iMac on my network thru ethernet - 12-17-2009, 06:26 PM

Hi, fairly new here and still figuring out the ins and outs of modded 10Vs. Have had mine about a week now and running OSX 10.6.1 with success thanks to the guides and forums here. But one weird thing I've noticed is that I can't connect to my iMac on my network through ethernet, but I can when I'm connecting through the wireless card. As I only have the b/g card, I'd prefer to use the ethernet connection occasionally when backing up large files etc.

Is this a problem with my 10V configuration or with my Trendnet wireless router (TEW 632BRP)? I got this "N' router at a good price but am not thrilled with it, in particular it's poor ease-of-setup. I had the hardest time getting my Wii console connected to it for instance.

I don't know enough about these things to know whether it's the 10V's ethernet or a problem with the router. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

----------------
I should add that I can connect to the internet without a problem when connected to router through ethernet and with "airport" turned off, so it doesn't seem to be a cable issue or completely faulty ethernet card, etc.

Do you have file sharing enabled on the iMac? If not, you won't be able to mount any drives from it. Define "connect to" here, can you ping it? SSH? If you can get to the internet with wired ethernet, you can send traffic on the wire. That's about all you need for getting the machines to talk. At that point, it's more about security settings and such. The machine you're attempting to use as a server is where you want to set that sort of thing up.

Yes file sharing is set - up. What I mean by connect to is to use "Connect to" from a finder window on the 10V so that I can access the various folders etc on the iMac. The iMac does have File sharing turned on. The strange thing is it works when connecting through the wireless card on the mini, just not when I turn it off and use the ethernet connection through the same router. Very strange.

I have found the wireless network to be much more robust that the hard line - sometimes I think the ethernet cable just doesn't sit well physically because I can remove it and plug it back in and suddenly other macs on the network become visible. It also seems just moving it slightly causes a disconnect... no other computer (macs, 1 windows box) have this problem with any of the physical cables in my house like the 10v does... curious heh?

Curious indeed! So maybe this is a somewhat common 10V problem. I'd bet few users here have even tried their ethernet ports, as the raison d'etre of a netbook is wireless connection. So maybe it's an under-reported issue?

I hope some others chime in on this.

Interesting. I'll have to play with wired networking over the weekend. I'll try doing a Time Machine backup or something to stress test it.

I'm having the similar/same problem.

My Dell Mini 10V will not connect to the internet through the ethernet port/wire. It works fine wirelessly, but when connected it says limited connectivity.

The only thing I've tried was to completely uninstall the driver and reinstall a driver downloaded from Dell.com.

After this, it still wouldn't connect.

What do you all suggest?

tehrahk: You're in the OSX forum, we aren't running Windows, so the Dell drivers won't help us. It sounds like you're on Windows, I suggest trying that forum as they are more likely to be able to help you.

I played with wired networking, it worked fine for me. Internet, file shares to my NAS, printing, all worked fine. I did not try enabling file sharing on my real Mac to try that. I don't see any reason all that would work and AFP wouldn't unless it's a configuration issue related specifically to Apple sharing.

It's a driver issue with zeroconfig / bonjour.

I am having the same problem when connecting via ethernet. I can see my smb shares, but cant connect to them. I can't see any of afp shares at all. Is there are workaround or a fix for this? This was working in 10.5, but i just wiped my drive when upgrading to 10.6 on my mini 9.
