Default Mysterious Sound! - 12-10-2009, 12:17 PM

Is there any way of telling what application or background task is producing a sound with OSX please?

Periodically I get what I have identified as the OSX 'purr' sound from my system. But when I look on the dock, nothing is bouncing to tell me that something of significance has happened. I generally just have Firefox and Eudora running and that's it. Both of those seem to bounce if anything has actually happened, like new mail, or a browser session warning. In Eudora I have audible alerts turned off, and I can't find anything in Firefox that is sound oriented.
I'm used to Windows where if any alert happens, it's normally accompanied by a popup on the screen in some way, but this isn't happening with OSX.

So I'm a bit baffled...
