Yeah, now that I've re-read what was posted you're likely correct. Still, knowing that the assignments can be changed in the System Preferences may help the OP or possibly even change his/her mind about popping the keys off.

@ outphase

If you have an issue with me report me to the mods.
I think outphase just wants to communicate that not everyone possesses the same level of skill, or even the same capability of reaching that particular level of skill, as others. That's important when trying to impart information to another person. A sound approach would be to provide the simplest way to do something (in this case, the GUI) and then also offer information about what the GUI is actually doing. This way, the person has the easy answer, and the opportunity to learn more should he or she desire so.

Dear friends,

Thank you for your replies. I ran NBI with just the Quiet Mode checkbox selected and it worked beautifully. I'd like to think I'm fairly computer literate, and have dabbled with Terminal scripts before. However, this is my first experience in creating a Hackintosh and I am taking a rather 'safe' approach to it!

With respect to keys; yes I wish to pop them off. That way alt can mean alt, and the Windows key can look like the command key.

And going back to the topic at hand, would be grateful for other tips on speeding up boot times.

Saj

Sorry, that involves removing or slimming parts of the os and is clearly is beyond the scope of understanding of this community as I understand it.

I think it might just be a matter of "gentle" force to pop them up. Maybe use a credit card to try and pop them off?

I think the Mini 10v is about as fast as it can get with respect to boot time, barring replacing the hard drive with a solid state unit. I think the issue is that some of the kernel extensions just take a long time to load. It's a fairly known issue. Most people report around 50-60s boot times. I have never timed mine, it certainly feels longer than that but who knows.

Actually, it involves the boot loader, but thanks for trying.

snkhan, Meklort has indicated a new version of NBI should be out by this weekend, and it will improve the boot times.

First off, there have been reports from two members in this topic. QUIT BICKERING. Don't be sarcastic, and don't make it personal. Just because someone likes to do something different doesn't mean it is absolutely wrong (and I talking to both sides here.) Any more and the topic will be closed as well as some infractions given. You've been warned.

As for the new bootloader coming up, I can't say for certain whether it is or isn't Chameleon 2.0 RC4, but I do know that meklort has made some modifications of his own that add features that are not in the generic Chameleon code, and more are on the way. (One specific mod is the kernel patch for Atom processors. It's already in NBI 0.8.3 RC4 and will be improved in RC5.)

Actually if you want to move forward , its better to understand DSDT and learning how to patch manually by hand. Sure NBI may do some behind the scene , but trust me at times over at IRC. There are number of users who ask questions such as "I ran NBI and i am not sure how to edit x,y,z". The reason why some of us prefer and force people to do the hard way is simple , you learn. You know how your hardware works and you can fix it yourself.

If you've the time , try the normal way of doing things. Stop NBI , do a fresh normal installation , prep your own dsdt , include generic fixes and voila. Snow Leopard. Rebuild cache by removing un-needed kext , speed up system by freeing up IRQs in dsdt. Once you've got the basics , again you could try GUI or automated tools. You need to understand the fundamentals. This goes same for your studies , its the same

So for me if you ask , if you want to decrease OSX boot time. Sure its possible , read up on OSX internals by amit singh. Learn more about the internals and bam. I'm not a computer science guy , but i am an engineer. I am trying my best to understand those terminology as well and explain back in plain english.

Thanks
