Default Just what is wrong with Bios A06 please? - 11-20-2009, 05:33 PM

I have yet to receive my Mini 10v, but am planning to attempt to install OSX or SL on it. I would like to dualboot with Win 7, and it seems to me that it would be best to use the most up to date BIOS to ensure that any SLIC table is OK.

But I note various references to the need to downgrade to A04 before attempting OSX installation. None of the posts I have seen have defined exactly what problems occur and, knowing how little use modern OSs make of direct calls to the Bios functions, I am at a bit of a loss to understand how a bios version change can prevent an installation from running properly.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has analysed the problem that occurs: and does it always occur, or under specific circumstances since there do seem to be some posts from people who have had no problems!

I really would like to avoid downgrading if poss since people seem to also have had trouble with the change as well!

My experience is that SL won't install using the A06 BIOS using NBM. I tried installing Leopard using NBM 0.8.1 with A06, but it kernel panicked every time. I don't know how Snowy would install, since I haven't done it yet, but I think it involves the install process.

I'm going to be downgrading the BIOS after I get it back from Dell; motherboard apparently was defective so they're taking it and sending it back with a fixed board.

Thanks for the reply. But, from your sig, you were successful using AO6 with 10.5.8?

Well, if someone can boot up with the verbose option (-v) and try installing, then take a picture or the kernel panic, I might be able to track it down (at least somewhat).

I'll try to do this after it arrives if it does come with A06. And I install the hard disk I have waiting. And its 2GB upgrade!
It's on its way, tracking says it's left the shipping depot...

Do you have access to another mac? I'm running A06 with 10.6.2. It's great!!!!

If you can pull your hd and update it as an external drive on another mac, using the directions at MechDrew's site OS X | mechdrew, you will be all set.

I have not tried updating any other way, and I have other macs I can use for the install. I was nervous about the bios, and wanted to keep it at A06 if possible. So, just to let you know, it does work this way!!!

In fact my Dell Ubuntu outlet 10v, which arrived yesterday, has come with the A04 Bios so I don't have to make a decision on downgrading. I'll just leave things as a they are while I play!

So far I've put in the 500GB disk that came with my SXPS16 ( I wanted to dualboot the SXPS with my old XP installation and Win7 so I built a new disk for the SXPS), upped the RAM to 2GB and will now persevere with the OSX installation.
