Angry "No Entry" sign above gray apple when installing - 11-10-2009, 08:13 AM

Hello,
I just received my Dell Mini 10v with Windows 7 on it.... and to be honest, was not impressed with the speed at all. Installed Ubuntu Remix - works great (and way faster) and I like it, but also want to try OSX before I settle on an OS (I know Windows very well, Ubuntu relatively well, however I am completely new to OSX)

I downgraded my BIOS to A4, set the required BIOS settings, purchased a retail copy of Snow Leopard 10.6, created a CD with NetbookCD 8.3RC, boot up with external DVD OK, get to the load screen OK, insert my SnowLeopard DVD, the apple logo appears (so it IS reading it) with the turning circle below... then about a minute later, a small no-entry sign appears just above the gray apple logo...

Any ideas what this is and why it does not proceed?

Have u formatted the drive??

Within the Snow Leopard Installer go into Disk utility. Format the drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and make sure its also GUID not MBR (do this by clicking the "+" sign below the partitions.

You get that symbol when the booter is unable to load the kernel. My guess is something when awry in the patching. Try re-making the DVD or do it with a USB stick.

Default Now working - 11-11-2009, 05:34 PM

Thanks - knowing what the issue was helped me fix it. I remade the cd and the new one worked.

For anyone else who had this issue - I am/was completely unable to make a bootable NetbookCD_0.8.3RC3 USB stick (using 4 different (brands of) USB sticks, not from Windows7 or XP or Ubuntu)... oh the process worked... its just that my mini 10v did not boot up with them. What I did was, made a CD (borrowed an external usb cd-drive from work), use that to boot up with... and goddamit, using the snowleopard CD DID NOT WORK (see above issue), however, I had my "large" usb (with the SnowLeopard OSX image on it from my previous attempts) still plugged in to my mini when I booted up with the NetbookCD, and it recognised the USB image (as well as the CD image)... I simply selected the USB image, and that worked. FYI: it took A LONG time to install... almost an hour.

Now all I got to work out is why the wireless is not working - strange, as in the initial setup it DID detect my network... now nothing.

If legacy USB support is turned off in the bios (so that sleep will behave correctly), it won't see a USB stick. I gave myself some gray hairs sussing that out (of all the gorram stupid things... ) on one recently.

The install will indeed seem like forever...

What do you have for a card? the 1397 or 1510?

I have a 1397.
However, now EVERYthing is working (except the wake from sleep - I've testing this now). I had many issues - wireless not working, audio not working, low resolution... then I followed the instructions of this: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/mac-...3-testing.html
