Default Set External Display as permanent Display? - 11-02-2009, 05:18 PM

Hi,

I have a Dell Mini 10v with 10.6 installed.

Whenever I plug into a external monitor with mirrored feature on it all goes like hell with white lines everywhere. As im aware it can only be used as an extended display.

Is it possible I can set my external monitor to be a permanent display and not mirrored?

Thanks

I don't understand what you mean by a permanent display? You've already made clear you know it can be used as an extended monitor. What are you looking for?

I think the word you're looking for is using an external display as the primary display. No, what you're looking for is not possible. The options are mirrored to both or extended.

I use mine in extended mode with screen 1 set to the external monitor. Then I just don't drag anything over to the smaller display (although sometimes I'll leave Mail on the Mini's display to keep it (Mail) out of the way but always visible).

If you're looking for clamshell mode (primary display is external with the Mini's lid closed), that's not an available option.

This is just the way it is.

In re-reading your latest post, it is possible to mirror without the garbled screen. There are several posts in the forum about mirroring and I believe the NetBookInstaller even has an option for the Mirror kext (athough I haven't run it in quite some time so I cannot recall specifically).

Cheers guys. Netbookinstaller works and you get it to mirror except resolutions are all messed up.

Thanks

If by "messed up" you mean the external is the same as the internal (1024x600), then yes. That is actually what mirroring is: The external is a reflection of the internal.

If you want clamshell mode, where the internal display is off and the external is driven to its fullest supported resolution, I'm honestly not sure that's possible with the Mini's.

If you want the external monitor to be your primary monitor just drag the menu bar from the displays pref pane to the external monitor.

Much of your post has been answered, but the part on the white lines everywhere.

this is because for some reason mirroring got turned on, you have to turn it off

1: find a copy of mirroring (download DellEFI, show contents, copy it out) put it in /user/bin

2: open a terminal window, type "mirroring off", but don't hit return
3: plug your external display in, wait for the white lines
4: hit enter, which will run the mirroring command

Once you do that, it should hold that setting for that monitor, you never have to do this again (if you switch monitors, you have to do it once, again)

then you can turn the external display to be your primary display using the "arrangement" tab in the displays systems preferences app. Drag the toolbar to the external display and all is good. But you can't make the internal display go "away" but who cares, just ignore it.

And, when the external is not plugged in the toolbar and the dock revert back to the internal.

PS. The only issue that I have with doing this is that after a reboot the first time I plug the monitor in will hang the machine unless it has been put on standby. (an easy fix, this has been reported elsewhere)

I used to be able to easily make the external monitor as the only, and primary display in the following manner:

Immediately after POST, hit fn8 once or twice so only the external monitor lit up.

To get rid of blockiness I had to use netbookinstaller 0.8.2rc3 with "old GMA450 friendly" kext option checked, and then switch to "thousands" of colors after fully booted.

Unfortunately, I installed the non-beta version of 0.8.2 over the top of the RC, and now when I try to do that, the machine won't boot up fully, and I only get the blue screen with the pinwheel of death.

I like the non-beta 0.8.2 because the video seems a bit quicker and I have the transparent finder bar. I wish it could all be sorted out. Ultimate blame goes to apple though for not putting an option in monitors preferences to shut off a display, a capability that windows has had since Windows95, fifteen years ago.
