Had my Mini 10v rocking along on SL 10.6, and connected to my home network. Woke it back up and it said there were upgrades to be installed. So I allowed it. Now, I'm stuck in the reboot loop. If I can avoid a clean install, I'd really like to.

Is there a way to upgrade to NBI 0.8.3 from 0.8.2 without putting 0.8.3 onto my original installation flash drive? IOW, can I put it on a different flash drive and install it from there? I have it on a drive now, but can't seem to access what I need to in order to upgrade. My access to a Mac is a bit limited, but I could get access to put 0.8.3 on my original flash drive.

Try booting from your original usb drive (enable usb legacy support) and running NBI 0.8.2 from the Utility (I think) pull down menu. That might do the trick.

Then install NBI 0.8.3Final on your HDD in the App folder. For any future updates, run it after the updates are installed but before you do a restart.

Tried that, Phil. It did eliminate the hibernate image too old message, but it is still stuck in the reboot loop.

I agree! I'm almost ready to re-image. I have about 200 photo's I hadn't backed up. If I can get them off, then a re-image is in the works.

What did you try exactly? I would not think what w7ox posted would work if you are at 10.6.2, as running 0.8.2 is probably not going to get you back into OS X to ever be able to then run 0.8.3 final. If that is the case, you need to re-image your flash drive with the NBI_083F dd Image as described here. By booting it, you should be able to get back to OS X to run 0.8.3 final and reinstall the Chameleon bootloader (which is the key to getting everything working again).

If you can't boot with the image above, try NetbookCD 0.8.3 if you have an external CD drive. Another option is to use a Linux live CD to manually install the special NBI Chameleon bootloader. Try the other stuff first, as that last option is non-trivial.

I re-ran Netbook installer 0.8.2 from the utilities menu, which I accessed from my original usb flash installation drive.

I have a 1 gig flash drive with the 0.8.F nbi on it, but am unable to get it to load. If I try to boot up with only that drive in, it tries to boot to my internal hdd, and it goes through the endless loop of trying to boot up. If I put my original flash with OSX installer along with the flash that has 0.8.F, I am able to boot to the installation flash. It won't allow me to run the Netbook installer to go to 0.8.F. I feel that I'm close, but just missing something.

NBI 0.8.2 does not have the special version of Chameleon that patches the 10.6.2 kernel to re-enable support for the Intel Atom CPU, so running it is going to get you nowhere. That feature was added beginning with 0.8.3 RC4. Somehow you are going to have to figure out how to run that version or newer NBI. Again, if you have or can borrow an external CD drive, try NetbookCD. Some have better luck with it than with an NBI-imaged flash drive. Another option is to boot your installation media and, instead of running 0.8.2, open Terminal. Then run the following commands
Code:
cp /Volumes/InternalDrive/mach_kernel /Volumes/InternalDrive/mach_kernel_10_6_2 (This backs up the 10.6.2 kernel)
cp /mach_kernel /Volumes/InternalDrive/ (This copies the original 10.6 kernel from your installation media to your HDD)
Reboot, and it should boot OS X. Then you will want to run NBI 0.8.3 final and put the 10.6.2 kernel back in place by renaming it to "mach_kernel" again.

Your other options are to a) get access to a Mac and put 0.8.3 on your install media (or use TransMac on Windows) then run it or b) use a Linux LiveUSB to manually install the special NBI Chameleon that comes with 0.8.3.

btw: because of this wonderfull forum and meklorts idiot-proof guide i now have a 100% working hackintosh netbook! thanks!
Thanks! I followed this and didn't receive hibernate ... too old message either. And sleep mode still works!

*And yes thanks to this wonderful forum, meklorts and other guides to get an awesome hackintosh netbook!

Thumbs up fixed stubborn "hibernate image too old" message - 03-23-2010, 09:22 AM

The issue of a recurring "hibernate image too old" message at startup has been discussed before, but here's my experience with it. My interpretation of what I was seeing may not be entirely correct, so please excuse any mis-statements.

I had the issue where the "hibernate image file too old" message at startup kept returning even after I thought hibernation had been turned off. I would re-run NBI to make sure hibernate mode was turned off. At this point I would notice that my available SSD capacity would increase by ~1GB, indicating that the Sleepimage file must have been removed (as intended) by NBI. Upon reboot, the "hibernate image file too old" message would indeed be gone for the first startup. But once the startup was complete, I'd notice that my available SSD capacity was down by ~1GB again, suggesting that the Sleepimage file had returned. Sure enough, during restart, I'd see the "hibernate image too old" message again! Using Console, I could see that NBI had sent the message "Hibernation Disabled: Yes" but it seemed that this condition wasn't sticking permanently. Something kept causing the hibernate image message to return. (Interesting to note, it didn't matter which of the boxes I ticked in NBI -- it didn't even have to be the Disable Hibernation box -- but installing *any* of them would result in my SSD capacity increasing by ~1GB, presumably as the result of removing the Sleepimage file, although I cannot say for sure.)

Finally I tried the two Terminal commands mentioned by mst0192 in message #62 of this thread:

(Unlike mst0192, however, I left secure virtual memory enabled in System Preferences, and have USB BIOS Legacy Support enabled and USB Wake Support disabled.)
That seems to have done the trick. I am no longer getting the "hibernate image too old" message at startup, even after several successive restarts, and my SSD capacity is holding steady at the number formerly attained immediately after re-running NBI.

FYI, I'm using a fresh install of OS 10.6 on a brand new Mini 10v (it came with BIOS A04), updated to 10.6.2 with System Updater, then ran NBI 0.8.3Final. Now all seems well.

Many thanks for the helpful information on this group!
