Default Mini 9 to Mini 10v Migration: My Fix for Sleep Problem - 09-26-2009, 11:01 PM

(Originally from this thread: Mini 10v, 10.5.8 - Will Not Wake from Sleep)

I was having a devil of a time trying to solve this problem: I transferred my files from a Mini 9 with OSX to a Mini 10v. It went well except for one annoyance: The 10v would not totally go to sleep. The screen would go black, but the computer stayed on (no blinking LED and running very warm). I would have to power down and restart to get it going again.

(This can also happen if you decide to make any changes which involve backing up your drive and reinstalling to the same 10v.)

A few other users have been having the same problem. I'm happy to say after a zillion trials, tribulations and hair pulling, I finally got it working. Here's how:

The first step is to back up your files (from the first machine, if you're migrating from another Mini) to an external drive. I used SuperDuper to do this.

I wiped the 10v's drive and did a complete reinstall with NetbookInstaller 0.8.2. (with 10.5.6 from a retail disk.)

After the first reboot (not safe mode) I ran Software Update instead of using the 10.5.8 Combo Update file I keep on my install USB stick.

THEN I booted into Safe Mode and ran NetbookInstaller, checking Chameleon Bootloader, 10v Extensions, Create dsdt file and Enable Remote CD (no real reason, it was checked anyway). Reboot.

Here's what I think is the key move. When I migrated my user account from the backup drive, I kept Applications checked, but unchecked the Files and Folders from my backup drive's top level. (There was obviously something in my top level directory that was fuster clucking the sleep function.)

For good measure after the migration completed, I ran NetbookInstaller one more time before I rebooted.

I rebooted into my migrated account, all apps were restored (including all Mail accounts and settings) and sleep is now working exactly as it should - complete with working audio when i take it out of sleep.

What a learning process. But at least I learned. I am curious as to what file or bug was causing the problems, but for now I won't lose sleep over it.

I am pretty sure you could have simply restored completely from your backup and then run NetbookInstaller, ensuring that you generate the dsdt.aml and then reboot

But I am glad you got everything working! Congrats

Ohhhh, no. Nothing that simple worked (check the thread - it was a nightmare). I did several OSX reinstalls, many many runs and reruns of NetbookInstaller and many restores before I tried unchecking Files and Folders. That was the only thing that worked for me.
