10.5.8 Upgrade Corrupts Desktop/Finder - 09-14-2009, 05:02 AM
I just received a refurb 10v and used Mechdrew's USB method to install Leopard. The 10.5 retail install works without a hitch, but the 10.5.8 Combo Update does something funky to the display. Restarting after the update goes through the boot process with the Apple Logo, then goes into the blank blue desktop for a moment before loading the Finder. In a normal boot sequence, the Finder loads up, with the menubar, the mouse cursor, and the dock. What is happening for me instead is I get the cursor, and it responds normally to the trackpad, but the desktop is white with staggered horizontal black lines across it. Sometimes it appears as though the dock has loaded, but the icons are similarly corrupt blank white boxes with black lines. Clicking these phantom icons does nothing. Hitting the screen toggle (F1) key will jump to the gray Apple logo on white, with a frozen timer icon. It stays on this screen, F1 will not toggle back.
I have booted with -x and -f from console with no effect. I've repeated this twice, upgrading to 10.5.8 using the install package and also from Software update.
My past experience with putting Leopard on a Toshiba Tablet PC gives me a hunch that maybe the 10.5.8 update is changing a display kext and I need to figure out what to change it back to. Before I embark on that journey, I was wondering if anyone out there has also run across this issue and found a solution.

I started over using reydemia's guide here:
Fool Proof No Hassle Mini 10v Install EVERYTHING WORKS!!
The display issue crops up during the 10.5.7 update, but clears up after a safe reboot. Not sure exactly what the difference is compared to mechdrew's, but it works.
Anyone having this problem may want to try the above guide.
