Default 10v keyboard layout in osx - 09-04-2009, 07:37 AM

Thanks to all the work on the forums - I installed osx on my dell mini 10v today.

However, I just started using the osx and realized that some keys do not do what they are suppose to.

Eg. when i highlight a folder and hit enter it does go into a folder, instead it allows me to rename the folder.

the ctrl button is actually the apple command button.

So my question: Is there a way to fix the keyboard layout so apple recognizes all the keys?
If not, is there a guide for the new keyboard? I have never used a mac before and this is starting to get a little frustrating.

Thanks for any helpful replies.

Return to change the name of a file/folder is the default behaviour in OSX. I know this is odd if you don't come from a Mac background but it has always been the case.

You can find the Mac shortcut keys here: Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts

On my (UK keyboard) 10v, running OSX 10.5.8:

CTRL = CTRL
Left ALT = Alt (or Option as it is sometimes known as)
Left Win = CMD (or Apple, squiggle etc) - this is the key used by most Apple shortcuts, in the way CTRL is in Windows
ALT-GR = CMD / Apple
The right Windows key (context menu?) = CMD / Apple

The keyboard layout is as it would be on an Apple keyboard, so some of the keys don't do what they say they do on the tin - this is OK if you can touchtype on a Mac keyboard but will need getting used to:

The #~ key = \| (Slash, Pipe)
@ = " (shift-')
" = @ (shift-2)
\| = §±
`| = `~
# = OPT-3 (Alt-3)

If you go to System Preferences > International,
Click "Input Menu"
Tick "Keyboard Viewer"
then put a tick in "Show input menu in menu bar"
you will be able to call up the "Character Map" whenever you need it to remind you which key does which.

Finally, you can change which keys act as modifiers in the "Keyboard & Mouse" preference pane in System Preferences.

HTH

Yes. This is normal keyboard behavior under Mac OSX

Take some time to familiarize yourself with how a Mac operates. Some of the keyboard shortcuts vary slightly... but I am sure you will find out what you need quickly!

Check out the link posted above... to do what you are trying (opening a folder) you hit "Command + Down Arrow" (which is "Windows + Down Arrow" on your Mini)

You can go to into the Keyboard Preferences and I think the option is called "Modifier Keys" or something.

I don't remember what the last two on the list of 4 is but I swapped them.

So now ALT = Option
Windows key = Apple/Command key

I'm actually pretty fine with the keyboard layout with no adjustments. I put expose for windows on the right Ctrl key and dashboard on Insert. My real complaint was the lack of play/pause control for iTunes.

Well I just bought the Macheist bundle and it include a little app called Tracks that solve this. I assigned play/pause to Left CRTL + escape and love it. Tracks does more than that but that alone was worth the $20 I paid for the bundle.
