Question Hackintosh without a Mac? - 08-09-2009, 12:35 AM

I'm interested in the possibility of installing OSX on my 10v. However, I don't own a Mac already (which is why I'm interested). The instructions I'm seeing around require some work with the Mac to partition the USB drive using a Mac partition of some sort. I admit that I've only glanced over the instructions, but I'm pretty sure everything I've read requires having a Mac to start with.

Is this true or can I do it without owning a Mac?

you can do it with a windows app called transmac

use it to format and mount the mac .dmg images.

i built mine with three thumb drives
--16g for the 10.5 DVD image
--1g for the 10.5.8 combo upgrade CD image
--1g to boot off

if you have an external dvd drive then u can go to www.63oh.com. I used this method and it was pretty easy for the most part.

If you have an external DVD drive the guides here work just fine.

Yeah I don't have a Mac and didn't have any problems. I also used the external drive method.

It's pretty damn simple. I'm going from memory when I tried it back in January or so -- I took OS X for a test ride for two weeks before going back to XP and then Windows 7. All you had to do is boot off the loader CD that's available here, swap to the OS X DVD when requested, and complete the install. It's in the guides in the OS X board. Took me two hours one night, and that's after having to restart the install because I screwed something up.

It's all in the guides in the OS X forum. This is the 10v discussion forum. You might want to go over there and look around (hint.)

Talking You don't need a mac or a dvd drive if you do this... - 04-27-2010, 08:41 PM

I did this because I don't know to many friends with a mac
You can buy a Snow Leopard Installation USB Flash Drive with osx already installed on a usb. Its just $70

So they charge $40 for what you can do yourself for free. Interesting, but I suppose it's worth it if you don't want the hassle. Many of us have installed OS X without a Mac.
