Default Hard Drive Upgrade - 02-19-2014, 08:49 PM

Hi gang.
I would like to upgrade from the 160Gb drive to a larger, say 500Gb drive.
What is the max size the system (BIOS) will handle?? Will I have to update the BIOS if I go to a 500Gb drive. (Many horror stories about BIOS update).
Let me know.

Hi Doc,
I'm not sure what the largest possible size is, but I recently upgraded to a 320 GB and had no problems. There was no need for me to upgrade the BIOS, but I'm not sure what BIOS version is currently on there. It may have been already upgraded by the previous owner.

I don't think you run into any problems with the BIOS until you get to 2TB. I know that in desktop drives many of them nowadays have sector sizes larger than 512B, which requires a BIOS that understands that. Those tend to have jumpers to select. I don't know if 2.5" drives have such nowadays. Certainly you won't have an issue with 500GB.

I already upgraded drive with solid state:
CT3794798 - Crucial M500 240GB

but it isn't enough and when I asked Crucial representative he told me 1TB won't work, wich I don't believe! Anyone tried 1tb or more SSD with the 1018? if yes what brand/model?

If it's slow it must be Windows!
