Default Best operating system for Dell Mini 1018? - 11-14-2011, 02:47 PM

Hi All

I have just bought a Dell Mini 1018 with Windows Starter pre loaded. I know i shouldnt expect the little netbook to be lighting fast but it really does drag when working on it. I am contemplating starting from scratch and installing XP because of its less demand on the processor (1.67 Ghz, 2gb ram).

1)Would this help? any advice with OS to speed up the machine would be appreciated.

2)Also, will i have problems with Bluetooth and wi-fi if i install xp? i have found a number of sites with the windows xp drivers available but will obviously not know if they work or not until it is too late!

Thanks

If you just want to experiment try one of the Linux's. You don't even have to get rid of Windows 7. Just dual boot. I run Ubuntu 10.04; Mandriva One, and Joli 1.2 on my 1010 and all of them run quite well and faster than XP; which I also run. Also you won't have to pay a dime to try them.

If you dont want to install them to your hard drive; buy a couple of USB flash drives or SD/HC cards and you can run the Linux's off of them. There is a program called Linux Live that will install the OS and set it up to boot off of the removeable drives instead of booting off your hard drive. While you can use 4gig flash drives I recommend the 8 gig ones to give you a little space to grow. fdalbor

@fdalbor

Thanks for the advice! been thinking about that option too (making multiple partitions) and trying a few out.

1) does having a number of other bootable OS on the same harddrive effect the performance of the PC at all?

2) you are running 4 different OS namely ubuntu, Mandriva One and Joli 1.2 as well as XP. Can you put a ranking on them? i mainly use my mini for internet, office and email...havnt had it long enough to start playing around with my music collection.

Cheers
