have you enabled 'Legacy USB" in the BIOS?..without it the system will not boot from USB, also make sure that the DVD drive is plugged into the powered USB, it usually the one closest to the power plug (unless it has its own power supply)

Did that and the disc won't load, looking at the drive it says windows can't access this disc, it seems like a licensing issue or something as other discs work fine.

the license has nothing to do with it as where it hasnt even gotten to that point yet, sounds like you just might have a bad disc, have you tried that disc in another computer?, or better yet unplug the DVD drive and try the drive and the disc in another computer

BTW: what happened to the restore disc that came with the machine?....and if it didnt come with one there should be a restore partition already on the drive that you can restore from

The restore disc is there but it's only the starter edition installed, i am trying to install something better without buying it as i have discs here that i have used on others. BTW is there any downside buying upgrade software over a retail pack not upgrade?

well, 1st of all what ever discs you have already are probably only licensed for 1 PC and loading them on to another PC is ILLEGAL...and not allowed to be discussed on this forum. 2nd Microsoft does sell a Anytime Upgrade Package for Windows 7..not sure of the pricing.....check with Microsoft's home page, that package would allow you to upgrade from the Starter Edition to ANY other edition you choose to pay for.
