As for battery vs wall power being a problem, wireless cards do have a number of power saving options. And it wouldn't be unusual for the driver/OS to activate them when on battery power. But they might not work right, and they can impact performance even when they work correctly. This might be configurable.
Furthermore, I found this thread about Realtek wifi on Win7 which might relate to your problem: why Realtek wifi doesn't work on battery power: Po... - Toshiba Forums. (I think the 1018 usually/always has a Realtek WiFi card)
