Default Good Dell Mini 9 Replacement? - 10-19-2010, 09:34 AM

I recently had my faithful Dell Mini 9 stolen (wah!) and I really miss the darn thing. It had a colourful life, starting with Win XP, moving graciously to Mac OSX and in it's final days was happily cavorting with Meego.

Now, I know they don't make 9s anymore, so all things considered, would a 1018 be a good, if a bit bigger, replacement?

It's certainly bigger! Over the Mini 9 I would say the 1018 has a better keyboard, operating temperature and battery life. On the downside the speakers are worse, (only 1) and you aren't earning a much better screen - I have to admit that once I weaned myself off 1024 x 600 I found it hard to go back. It is nice and cheap though.

If you can afford it I'd go with the 1012, it has a much better spec, more ports, and more configurations (HD Screen for example).

You might actually want to wait out for the Inspiron Duo, looks like a fun piece of kit!

The 1012 is good, but look at the Latitude 2110. I went from a Dell Mini 9 to the 1012 to the Latitude 2110. I have one with an HD touch screen and just recently added a Broadcom Crystal HD decoder as well. It's my favorite netbook so far.

Do you still care about OSX? 'Cause it doesn't run as well on the newer 1012 and 1018 as it does on the older 9 and 10v/1011.

Mini 9 | Intel 5100 Wifi | Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook
Mini 1012 | SSD | Intel 6200 Wifi | Ubuntu 11.10 64bit
