On the other side I prefer the looks on the 1018 but that seems to be the only pro now (well that and the fact that I already ordered, paid it and the 1012 dissapeared :P)

It seems I will have to stick to the 1018... Let's hope it's not that worse compared to the 1012
Unfortunately I can't do any side-by-side comparisons as I only ever borrowed a 1012 from Dell, but the 1018 should be better performance wise based on the DDR3 RAM. Programs should load up and switch quicker etc - although you are still limited to just 1GB. Really what it boils down to is whether you'll be happy with the port availability and the design. Everything else is essentially the same as the most basic model of the 1012

£279 is a great price for an entry netbook, it's just a pity at first glance it doesn't seem very upgradable.

I would be astonished if the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 made a visible performance difference in an Atom-powered system. DDR3 will have reduced power consumption.

Well I DON't really need 3 USB ports at the same time, but I don't like not knowing it before. The mic in... I probably won't use it in the netbook but... how is the laptop speaker?

I could stand the lack of ports but I don't know how just 1 speaker will sound. I don't want it to be a disco but I would like to be able to watch a movie for example.

How is the 1 speaker performing?

EDIT: Anyway, I called my commercial at Dell and she said I couldn't cancel it now, I would have to wait until I get it and then I have 7 days to send it back... meh.

Chore!

The speaker is ok, pretty loud actually. You can tell that it's coming from the right hand side of the laptop though. You will see for yourself soon enough.

Nice, I want it now! :P

Meh, I won't send it back, I need it for class and I can stand having 1 port less.

Thanks for the video and first impressions! (and OT again, you are from Hampshire Heavies? :P)

Is it me or does the wrist pad seem to be more heavily textured than on the 1012?

so a question about the touchpad, is it all one piece but with the button's raised?. if so that would be a great swap for the current all flat pad in the 1012. the design on that one makes the pad to accidental inputs. I can't wait to see someone crack a 1018 open and see whether the touchpad is swappable. the wrist pad should be swappable as a unit.

so does this touch pad support multiple finger inputs like the one in the 1012?

No but I used to frequent the servers! I'm actually getting back into TF2, so might hang around there again!

The touchpad has 2 buttons that are separate from the touchpad surface.

Also doesn't appear to have multi-touch support like 2 finger scrolling.

@Dunhamzzz: You mentioned that you had the 250GB hard drive in the video, so does that mean you also got the 6-cell battery? I'm not familiar with the previous (1012) model, but I know that the mini 10v's (1011) have a noticeable physical size difference in the 3-cell vs 6-cell batteries.

Have you tried the headset/headphone with mic&speaker in one jack (like the one for iPhone)?
