Default So what exactly is a 1018? - 08-23-2010, 08:36 PM

I was reading up on the 1018 and I'm confused. Is this a stripped down version of the already stripped down 1012? I read through the spec sheet and it reads like the basic 1012 in an all black case. Did I miss anything?

It's just a slight refresh of the 1012. A new CPU that supports DDR3 is the most obvious change.

correct instead of the n450 it has the n455 which supports DDR3 type memory which is supposedly faster than DDR2 type memory and it has the black base as opposed to the white base......also you state the 1012 is stripped down...that is incorrect....you can spec out the 1012 with the TV tuner,HD screen, Broadcomm HD card, wireless 'n', it depends on what you want to spend...if you spend cheap you get cheap....bottom line.....the 1018 will be available the same way...eventually!!

read my sig, I got my 1010 with everything.....yeah I paid $425 but never complained about what it didnt have or have to look for parts/upgrades on eBay either.....and have been very happy ever since....its like everything in life, you get what you pay for..you cant pay for a volkswagon and expect a corvette

Dell Mini 10 (Obsidian Black 1010), 2gb RAM, 1.6ghz 533mhz FSB (Z530) processor,A10 BIOS, 750gb WD Scorpio Blue Hard Drive (5400rpm), Intel GMA 500 Integrated Graphics, TV Tuner, Bluetooth 2.1 module with EDR, 1.3mp Camera, 1366x768 HD Screen, Wireless 1510 b/g/n mini card, 6 cell (56WHr) Battery..every option except GPS (wasnt out yet), 4gb SDHC, 8gb Flashdrive, Targus Netbook Chillpad, Targus Sport Case, Windows XP Pro SP3 (98gb)/Windows 7 Ultimate (600gb) (Dual Boot)

With all due respect, what does this have to do with anything? You do realize you've said this to me and several others in the past right? Sometimes people just enjoy learning and tinkering instead of voting with their wallet.

BTW, what I meant about the 1012 being stripped down is that it is a netbook and as such it's hardware specs are pretty basic. And BTW, the base model 1012 has essentially slightly lower specs than the 1018, so it was a fair question.

right now the 1018 is the stripped down version because it comes with nothing..with the 1012 you can get whatever you want, also as far as the wallet goes I am sick and tired of people bragging that they got such a good deal then spending the next 6 months trying to find the parts that they should have just ordered in the first place..it has nothing to do with tinkering...tinkering is something you do with a 1939 Plymouth on a weekend, a computer you should just be able to take it out of the box and forget about it

Why, because you say so?

Yes there is great benefit to doing things the way you want right out of the box, but there is also great benefit to doing things as you wish, be it with a desktop you built from parts, or a netbook you bought cheap and modified to your liking. there are different people with different priorities and different reasons for doing what they chose to do, and I don't think it is really yours, mine or anyone's place to repeatedly give folks a hard time for choosing a different path than that which we might prefer.

It seems the 1018 also has one fewer usb port than the 1012 (2 instead of 3) and lacks a microphone jack.

on the plus side, it's touch pad has raised buttons, which should prevent the accidental inputs common in the flat 1012 touch pad.

I just noticed an annoying thing - Dell is calling the 1018 a "10v" - at least in the Dell web site support model selector. Just what we need around here....
