Default dell 1012 dead after strange USB overload windows error! please help - 01-16-2012, 08:31 PM

Hi, I am new here; hello everyone.

My wife's 18 month old 1012 used daily, showed a strange error in windows about overloaded USB port, although there was nothing connected. The message said something about disabling it, then restarted the netbook to only beep with a blank screen.

I spent a bit of time yesterday and today researching all of the different scenarios, quite a few surrounding a bios update (although no bios had been updated) I did try the recovery method on here using a pen drive to no avail.

I have since removed the memory and hd, and tried powering up it then beeps twice with a pause, replacing the harddisk was then beeping 7 times and then a pause.

After taking all of the trim off in search of a cmos battery I have put it all back together and now it no longer beeps but still does nothing.

The power on button will light up the left little light and the HD light will go on for about 1-2 seconds and the screen stays blank.

I have tried various combinations of FN + END during powerup etc to look for a special single beep but nothing.

Really, I am just looking for some advice regarding

Firstly, if it has a faulty disk or memory would it still POST or could it do what this one is doing which is basically nothing.

If it doesn't POST without valid memory, is it worth trying to replace it?

I am going to check the disk in a pc tomorrow as it can work with a standard sata.

Also are these actually worth repairing professionally, they are incredibly expensive for really not much, when compared to something like a 6 year old Dell X1.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

if the HD is dead it should still pass POST, and come up with something like no disk or no operating system found..sounds like you may have a dead mobo...sorry

PS. Welcome to the forum anyway....

Thanks for the reply. I imagined this as being the fault but was constantly encouraged by other peoples similar experiences which were fixed by either swapping in new RAM etc, as some people said that the faulty RAM stopped any bios POST. The strange issue is the USB warning just before failure.

Are these netbooks worth repairing, either personnally or professionally? or would we be better off selling the disk, memory, charger and other bits seperately on "that auction site?

I have not found any MOBOs for sale but dont want to throw good money away if it is pretty pointless.

Thanks again for your response.

Stuart
