Default Screen video black - external video works - 12-10-2011, 03:02 PM

This is a strange problem.

A customer brought in a Dell Mini 1012 to replace the screen since it was cracked. I'm not sure if it was a fall or stepped on. I replaced the screen and it was working fine. When the customer picked it up, I showed him it was working. When I had my head turned from the unit, the screen went black on it. Now no video comes up on it at all.

The video cable was connected correctly on both ends. I even replugged both ends to make sure. I ordered a replacement video cable sensing that was the problem. Same result - black screen. External video works fine so it is working and booting to Windows XP.

Even the bad cracked screen doesn't have video either which it did prior to the blackness issue.

With the battery and power adapter not connected, I held down the power button for close to a minute. It didn't help. Reseated memory. Hard drive isn't connected. I connected the other end of the video cable for the web cam but didn't think it was required to get video on screen.

I'm thinking something happened on the motherboard related to the screen being cracked on the unit.

Mark

Default Same Issue except Mini 10 - 12-10-2011, 07:23 PM

I am experiencing the same exact issue, I have been able to get the video to show up on the actual laptop screen twice since last night, and only after I have done a system restore in windows. But it only works until I restart the system. I am at a loss as to what to do, it just does not make sense.

On the Dell mini 1012, I noticed video is very dim now via the netbook screen. But I can make out the Dell logo etc then trying to boot to Windows. It does this on two different screens and with two video cables. Before it seemed to me just black I couldn't make anything out.

External video still works great.

Customer said netbook fell from bed to floor and landed on its left side. Screen got cracked but screen video was ok for two boot attempts. Then something must have shorted out and now video is dim.

Default My screen has gone black too! - 01-26-2012, 03:28 AM

I've been using my 1012 with an external monitor while at home for a few days and the first time I try to use it on its own there is nothing visible on the screen - apart from a very faint black/light black image sideways on.
This is on top of two keys - CTRL and the bigger Shift - failing just before Christmas: they are sticking down and every time I turn the computer on I get a loud screeching ERROR signal that only stops with frantic tapping of the two keys.
Also the touchpad seems to have a life of its own at times too.
The machine is 15 months old - out of warranty of course - and is not looking to be such a good buy as of late...
