Exclamation Is my 1012 bricked? Please read, I really need help! - 11-15-2011, 12:24 AM

Hello everyone... I'm here because I think my 1012 is bricked... I really don't know how I managed to re re re re destroy my 1012 but I'll explain what happened...

About a week ago, my Windows XP partition got infected with W32/Ramnit.a and Win32/Ramnit.L viruses (really nasty viruses) and Trojan.Mebroot (a rootkit that messes with the Master boot record)... Even though the computer was infected it was still really operational. Then a couple of days later I got tired and I decided to start trying to fix it, the first thing I tried was to boot my 1012 in safemode which gave me a blue screen before the "windows XP loading" screen. After that, I did something really stupid which was to run msconfig and edit the boot.ini file to make the computer start in safemode. I rebooted and saw that I was still getting bluescreens... I thought it wasn't that bad because I still had Windows 7 installed on my other partition (I thought I would only have to run EasyBCD and fix the Windows XP boot.ini directly from W7) until I decided to close the lid of my 1012... A few minutes later when I decided to reopen it, the screen was black, so I shut it down by pressing the power button and since that, everytime I boot up my 1012 I get this black screen... There's absolutely nothing to do, there's no way to get to the OS choice menu, nothing...

I don't know if this can actually help but, here is a video of my 1012 failing at booting...

I hope someone will be able to help me!

And I'm sorry for my english.

Current system setup: Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 (Alpine White), 2GB ram, 56Wht 6 Cells battery, stock screen, dual booted Windows XP Pro & Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

Don't worry it's not bricked! you just need to reinstall windows, since it's infected with viruses! and my advise, just stick with one operating system. But that's my opinion!

Ok! Is there a way to fix that bug so I can go back on Windows 7 and fix the Windows XP boot file? I really need to back up my iTunes library and do some other back ups

the virus probably corrupted the MBR (Master Boot Record) and maybe even the partition table data, Easy BCD might fix part of it and Acronis Disk Director Suite might help too, but your best bet is to just reformat and re-install.....sorry

Yeah I'm pretty sure it did... Do you know how I can go back on W7 to run those softwares? Or will I have to make a bootable usb pen drive and boot from it in order to fix the MBR and/or run Acronis Disk Director?

I probably would chose the bootable USB drive, if the MBR or partition table are screwed getting into Windows 7 wont be an option here

NOTE: dont forget to enbable 'Legacy USB' in your BIOS

Alright thanks for the information Are you sure you can run EasyBCD from a usb drive?

---------- Post added at 08:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:55 PM ----------

I've downloaded and installed the Acronis Disk Director Suite then I clicked on "Acronis Bootable Media Builder" and I chose the "Acronis OS Selector Setup" option, everything went well. But it does nothing when I try to boot my mini from my USB drive, I still get that black screen... By the way, there is no "Legacy USB" in my BIOS... I'm desperate

maybe on the 1012 it isnt called 'Legacy USB' but when the system boots and you hit I think is f2 for boot options USB should be one of them, as far as Easy BCD working from a USB I really dont know

Well I finally found a way to boot from acronis os selector, I fixed the my Windows 7 problem so I can boot it... After that I launched EasyBCD and found that my Windows XP entry was removed from my boot menu so I created a new entry for my Windows XP partition and when I restart my computer and try to boot it it doesn't work, I'll post a video tomorrow!
