Default Best small SSD and 2gb memory? - 08-24-2011, 08:08 PM

Hey guys, I've had my dell mini 1012 for almost a year now (got it on sale for $179 and its a beast for its price)

I am thinking of upgrading the Hard Drive to an SSD, size doesnt matter as long as its cheap and 16gb+. This is because I mainly use this machine to get online when I'm away and connect it to a proyector for power point presentations at school.

Also I would like to know whats the best 2gb ram I can get for this badboy?(I need the specs for the fastest DDR2 module this setup can handle)
I am thinking of buying the parts from newegg so I would appreciate if I can find the things there

Thanks

check our forum sponsor for deals on SSD's (MyDigitalDiscount)..links are all over, and for the memory any 200pin standard DDR laptop memory will work, speed doesnt matter because the Mini will only run it at I believe its 667mhz, faster will fit but will be set at 667mhz anyway.....Crucial is a good brand to go for or Kingston is good also.....

Thanks for the tip, I got the ram at a local store for $35 (the one I wanted would cost the same with shipping to Puerto Rico).

Install was amazingly easy, would this SSD be good?

trying to keep costs down on this machine, also what tips and programs would you recommend in order to make this machine snappy? I did a clean install and only have Microsoft Office and firefox installed.

I am going to wait for hopefully Steve, (Holmes4) to hopefully read this and reply, he is much more familiar with SSD's and which are good and prices and such.......I believe that would be in YOUR best interest here......

as far as programs go, just load what you want and need, I would stay away from things like Photoshop which will bog the system down big time and run very sluggish, but with 2gb you should be in pretty good shape to run most programs, just try to limit what you run in the background and before your start up something new try to shutdown what you dont need, that will keep the system overhead down and ultimately make the system run faster and better

The thing is, I was saving up for a laptop but then I realized I worked mostly at home and used the netbook occasionally, so I bought an iMac for my home(Sure as hell broke the bank) with an SSD and all the goodies and I work from there.

Switching back and forth between my speed demon and netbook is hard lol, thats why I wanna make it fly with a good small SSD. (Kinda like my pretend mac book air )

I did some research on hackintosh for the 1012 and it had some kinks so I'll hold off for a bit, tomorrow I will be installing OSX on my fathers 10v.

The Samsung 470 Series is AMAZING on the 1012, and reasonably priced. I cold-boot into Windows 7 Pro in 8 seconds and MS Office 2010 programs load in half a second.
