Default Mini 1012 - External VGA Port - Maximum Resolution - 05-14-2011, 01:15 PM

I have a Mini 1012 and cannot find an official source that states what the maximum resolution supported by the external vga port is? I want to connect it to an external monitor but need to know what it can run, so i can buy an appropriate monitor for it. Ive read on the net that some people have run 20-23 inch monitors at 1920x1080 but end up getting flickering and i read elsewhere that the maximum res is 1440x1680 or something like that, but again its nothing official. Does anyone here run or has run there Mini 1012 with an external monitor ? If so, what size screen and res works properly without any problems? Also brand and model of monitor would be good to know too. Thanks in advance for any help provided.

According to Intel's website, the external VGA for the Atom N450 can drive up to 1400x1050, which doesn't give much choice for larger monitors. The best that I've found is the Dell 1910N, which is an 18.5 inch monitor at 1366x768. This also preserves the 16:9 aspect ratio and even matches the resolution of the 1210 HD models.

Physical size doesn't matter. Just resolution. I've run 1920x1080 (1080p) on various external screens. It's noticeably blurrier than an HDMI or DVI connection, but it's still decent. I haven't had any problems with flickering.

I wouldn't be surprised if it could go higher (maybe up to 2048x1536).

I am pretty happy just with the 1366x768 screen I have, when I want larger I go to my big HP 17in and get 1680x1050..thats my solution, I have HDMI on the 1010 and only s-video on the HP and my 32in TV only has s-video so I am kinda stuck with what I got for now..til I get a flat screen TV..in no rush for HDTV...it will be there when I can afford it or maybe something even better..now they got 3D HDTV....whats next?...4D HDTV (lol)

I'd say you should take your 1012 into the store and try it first. Intel states that the GMA3150 in the 1012's Atom N450 will not drive an external VGA past 1400x1050. The internal LVDS interface will drive only to 1366x768, but that's connected to your LCD. The Dell 1910N monitor is crystal clear on the 1012 and is 720p resolution.

Other models have different/external GMA graphics and HDMI ports, which will have different specs.

This is the design given to the processor by Intel, so Dell has no control over it.

Here's the specs. Page 10 is what you're looking for:

When I look in 'Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Adapter' it says the adapter type is Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150. 'List All Modes ...' shows these resolutions at the high end:
1360x765
1400x1050
1440x900
1600x900
1680x1050

They're talking about the external VGA connector, which is capable of 1680x1050. I just confirmed it with my 1012 connected to an I-Inc iF281D. It wouldn't go all the way to 1900x1200, but the image is still nice and clear at 1680x1050. The 10v also supports this resolution through the VGA port, so I'm guessing that the 1018 and 1010 likely does as well.

@kuoh I think the only one that would be better is something like my 1010 because its the ONLY model with the HDMI output

Hey guys,

in case this helps anybody out...

I'm running a standard 1012 with dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu.

In Win7 the best resolution I can get is 1680x1050.

However, Ubuntu has a 1920x1200 mode, which I am using now on a 24" monitor with my netbook screen off. It looks crystal clear.

Hope this is of use to someone.

Cheers.
