Smile BIOS reset jumpers - 03-20-2011, 02:41 AM

I have a couple of 1012 minis that kind folks have put on HDD passwords. They are running win 7 so the crtl- or Fn f11 combos won't work. Does anyone know where the jumpers are on the mobo to clear these settings? thanks in advance.

Are they protect with password the HDD inside the BIOS settings?
In this case the OS you use is irrelevant. You can not lift the password without loss all data on the HDD. In nowadays laptops the passwords can't be reseted. If you can prove by a bill to Dell that you are the real owner of the laptop, the Dell's customer service maybe can help (By the case of an Asus laptop the customer service of Asus could reset the Bios master password, but it may not work for HDD).

Anyway what is the "crtl- or Fn f11 combos" ?

There are no such jumpers in portable computers.

I believe there are people on ebay that sell you a password..similar to what Dell will do but a lot cheaper...not sure if you pull the button cell (CMOS battery) and leave it out for a minute or so and put it back if that would do it or not but as Steve said there are no jumpers on a Mini

If it is truly the HD password that has been set, then there is no way to unlock it by resetting the BIOS. The HD password is stored on the drive itself and not removeable without knowing the password. Even if the drive were pulled and installed in another PC, it would still remain locked. There is software that claim to be able to unlock some drives, but I've never had occasion to test it. If you feel brave and have nothing else to lose, then you might want to give it a shot.

It is part of a school lab so it doesn't matter about the data on the mini, I just want to be able to image it again. Pardon my ignorance but where is the button cell located. I opened it up but couldn't find one - that is why I thought there may be jumpers.

If this indeed doesn't unlock it, I don't suppose setting it as a slave and formatting it would work either.

the ctrl-f11 or fn-f11 supposedly let you reset the bios on bootup but only with xp. I've only read this and have never tried it.

Do not disassemble your 1012. To remove the coin cell battery won't do anything except to forget the bios settings not to reset any password! They can not be reseted in this way.

Since you don't care about the data, you can try HDD Unlock - Overview.
Check drive compatibility HDD Unlock - Supported Drives
