Default Mini 1012 Supports output to tv? - 10-20-2010, 09:03 PM

So I got this vga to component cable so I could watch media from my dell mini to my tv (the tv is a standard one . with a coaxial cable output in the back and a/v yellow and white outputs in the front). I got component instead of composite because I heard component was better and that I just need to match up the colors (blue to yellow and green to white). Well i hooked it up and when i switched to AV on my tv I get distored black screen (the kind you get on an old sega genesis game if the cart is faulty). I'm thinking that ok I probably cannot use the video but I couldn't even hear the audio . ! It's an old tv like I said so there aren't any settings to play around with . I tried pressing the F1 key on the mini to try and output the screen on the tv but nothing happened.

So I guess the question is, does the mini 1012 support output to tv via component? If not what can kind of cable does it use to output to tv? (besides vga).

Don't expect any of the "cables" to work - they require that the PC put out video on extra pins. You can get VGA to component converter boxes, but they aren't cheap.

Oh ok . You mean put out video on more than the standard 15 pins on a vga cable?

They use some unused pins.

Rich, I think you are confused - or BestBuy is worse at training than I thought. The order from lowest to highest quality is:

composite < S-Video < Component < HDMI

Actually, component and HDMI can be the same quality for many people.

yeah it could be Steve, it was back in like 2002 or 2003 I may have mixed it up and it was Circuit City not BB..anyway could be...I basically worked wireless selling Palm Pilots and Cellphones (TV's/Entertainment was in the dept next to me and I kinda just picked up on listening to other workers talking), then when Verizon put a kiosk in the store I went back to PC's/Laptops,Printers,Digital Cameras & Camcorders

You were doupt' into getting a cable that your Video card can't recognize.

Ive got a cable that accepts s-video in that transfers it into yellow /red/white/ cable. composite.
It's made for my old Gateway TOWER's PC NVIDIA MX440 (5 year old). Kinda' proprietary stuff there.

Like holmes4 said they do make VGA to composite adapter boxes. Its OLD tech that requires you to adjust picture from push buttons on the adapter box.

New tech would be the USB wireless adapters out there. Last I checked there were 3 good ones that transfered video from laptops to TVs (this was 3 months ago from an online PC magazine article). THese are around 100$ compared to the OLD crap 50$ boxes.

When I want to Transfer TV shows or Movies to my TV set I do it through My XBOX 360 and TVERSITY , or Win7 Media Center. I prefer TVERSITY Its free and does it fast.

!!!THis is wireless and free stuff man!!!

as for getting your desktop on your tv, tversity doesn't work l;ike that.
