Default Installing an SSD w/ Win 7 - 08-01-2010, 01:29 AM

If I want to install an SSD into my 1012, can I just swap the drives over and run a Windows 7 from a USB jump drive?

Or are there other steps involved?

thanks

I am not sure what you mean by "run a Windows 7 from a USB jump drive". If you have an existing installation you want to move, typically this would involve a disk imaging utility such as Acronis True Image to copy the existing image to the new disk. It's easiest if you have a USB enclosure for the new disk. If not, you can save an image to some external media, boot from the "rescue" device, and restore the image to the new disk.

Or, just install the new SSD and then install a fresh copy of the OS on it.

That's a fine choice. The Win7 install will add a small partition that aligns the C partition for better performance and helps with system recovery.

I used an external DVD Drive to put Ultimate on my SSD. (The drive is Windows/MAC compatible)

And I've used USB Jump drives for both Linux and OSX installs.

I've since dump Ultimate on my smaller SSD drive and installed several Linux distros. Ultimate ran great on it, but I needed to get some real work done.

I'm getting ready to put a 256 GB SSD drive that I have on the shelf into my 1012 and do the Triple boot dance. Windows/OSX/Ubuntu. Should be done with it this weekend.
