Will these cards work ok with windows xp? thanks
Hi studmonkey76,

How did you do that? I send them email saying that I have Atheros AR9285 instead of 1397 advertised and got the following response:

If the technical support confirms if you have received the wrong card you can return the whole system for a full refund and can order for a correct system.

I don't want different system but the 1510...

I recieved a replacement Dell 1510 and have not sent the 1397 back yet. If you would like pm me your info if you want the 1397. I can trade you and send them yours back. I dont think they will care as long as I return a wifi card they use back to them.

This is the driver for the HB95 that Dell just sent me:

Drivers and Downloads

It doesn't work any better or is any more configurable than the original driver though. It still only runs at 150. I definately recommend the 1510 or 1520. They run at 300 and are very configurable and reliable.

I recently upgraded two 1012's to the exact version of Linux. One is couple of months older than the other and they have very different wireless performance. The newer model has a nice and snappy wireless connection. the older one not so much. until I read this thread I had no clue what was going on and had no idea that dell had shipped them with different cards.

Are you guys saying not to go with the HB95 and instead replace it with a DW1510? By any chance, is this the card in question:

I ran a few searches online and found several sources and a very wide differences in price (see below). I would appreciate any thoughts or recommendations on which one to go with.

BTW, the card that is supposed to be in there is a Wireless 802.11n (HB95) Mini Card. I just checked and got the following as the wireless card currently in the old computer:

product: BCM4312 802.11b/g
vendor: Broadcom Corporation

and the following is in the new computer:

product: AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)
vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.

What gives. Did I get screwed by Dell? Should I be calling? and what should I be asking them for?

sounds like they just changed vendors..as long as you get wireless 'n' and 'g' on both..guess you're ok, I wouldn't worry about it.....

PS. I think they changed vendors on the hard drives too...glad I got my Western Digital before they switched..they probably just get whats available at the time or which company gives them the better bid on parts

yeah, but my issue is that the new computer with the atheron card has a considerably faster wireless internet connection. the one with the broadcom is kind of slow. is it possible to speed up the card, or should I just replace it (either by contacting dell or buying a replacement card). If I do replace the card, should I then use the same atheros card or go for the 1510.

Keep in mind I'm running Linux Mint 9 as the OS, which is a version of ubuntu 10.04.

EDIT:

I just ran a search and it seems like the Broadcom card only has wireless b and g, whereas the atheros does a/b/g/n. I bet that's what is causing the slowness.

well a little more research and it seems the Dell 1397 802.11B/G Wireless Mini Card is the dell name for the Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g. I just reviewed my order for that computer and sure enough, that's what I ordered. I can't believe I didn't look at that more closely. Oh well.

By any chance, do any of the links I found seem ok to you. I ask because some of the cards are being sold for the mid $20's, were as others are going for $50. The seem to be the same, but I'm not sure. I'm interested in the 1520 being offfered for sale.

so that is now a new HD screen, a new ethernet card, and now I'm debating whether to install a bluetooth card and free myself of the wireless mouse usb plug.

I'd get the 1510 or 1520 cards and bluetooth modules for both. Check the guy I recommended earlier in the thread. If he's still in business he gave me great package deals. I would update at least 2 at a time so I'd order at least 2 of each of the cards.

I could never get the HB95 card to go above 150 whereas the 1510 and 1520 will do 300. That speed is really only important if you are connecting to a gigabit router and wanting to transfer files across. Anyway, for the small investment you might as well have full speed components and while the system is pulled apart you should go ahead and install the BT module as well. You might never know when you'll need it. Just be sure to get the tiny little screws for the BT module.

Good Luck!
