Default Bluetooth or not? - 01-22-2010, 12:00 AM

It appears that the 1012 isn't shipping with bluetooth in the US, or even an option for it. Has anyone in the US received one with bluetooth?

Usually the module is listed as an addon, or at least listed in the hardware list when you are configuring it on their site.

This seems to be confirmed by another user on here who posted the lspci output from linux, but another user mentioned that he does have bluetooth (different country perhaps)?

The one sold at Best Buy shows that it doesn't have bluetooth...

Just trying to straighten out the confusion if anyone knows...

I was lucky to order early.
At that time a high resolution screen and bluetooth were still available as options in europe (austria and germany).
When I look at the dell site now, both options are gone

My guess ist that they stocked up with a number of pre-built devices, only some of those having bluetooth and other addons, and now that they are sold out it will take a while untill those options will come available agian.

Only thing you can do is call tell and ask and/or wait.

Anyone know if Dell actually has any plans to allow bluetooth to the non-HD versions of the 1012? Even the HD version doesn't appear to have a 365 card, as it mentions that it is some sort of internal USB device...

I'm surprised that virtually every other vendor has (and has had for some time) an internal BT option on their N450 line, other than Dell...

I wouldn't mind adding my own 365 card, but it also seems like Dell strips the headers off the slots if you don't order a config that requires them.

It is an internal USB device regardless.

Ahh, so the 365 is USB? Even so, you can't get it outside of the HD version...

Not exactly true. I picked up a 365 off ebay and I decided to go ahead and tear the system apart and it was exactly as I had read. There is a small plug on the right under the palmrest that you just plug the 365 module into. Just plug it in, reassemble, download the software, and viola, it works correctly. I'm using a bluetooth mouse as I type this.

The only problem I ran into is that you are supposed to screw the little module down after you plug it in, but I didn't have the little screw. I think it's the same one that you screw the 1397 or 1510 down with, but I'm not sure.

So it's pretty easy. I also pulled out the 1397 and stuck a 1510 in and now it goes 300 instead of 54. Nice improvement.

This unit is the low end 1012 without PCM sockets and with the low definition screen, but the little plug for the 365 was there.

I meant that you couldn't get it from Dell that way, but thanks for confirming the presence of the BT slot!! I think you are the first (that I could find). I have been hesitant to order one because of the potential for slot headers to be stripped off, but it sounds like I'm good to go!

It's not really a slot like the PCM slots that aren't soldered on. It's a tiny little plug that mates to the plug on the 365 module. But in any event, it is there, even on the low end 1012s. Just don't forget to get the little tiny screw.

So would this one work?

New Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth EDR Mini 1012 Netbook - eBay (item 370351799766 end time Apr-17-10 12:40:44 PDT)

Oh, and this is just the bare card (just asked the seller). Where do I find the tiny screw that's needed to install this? Thanks in advance!

Ok, one more question. To get Wireless N, I would need the 1510 half height card to replace the 1397? So that would be this one?

Sorry for all the questions but it's confusing with all the slightly different Mini models out there :-)

That's the module I used and it's working. My seller is sending me some screws but I have no idea where to get them. He said he had some extras lying around.

The 1510 is the one I used but there are others that will work. Dell is using a different one now called HB95. I've got one in this unit but I haven't powered it up yet to see how it performs. This guy ianbehnk@yahoo.com told me yesterday that he had 1510s for 23 bucks shipped and his stuff is new from Dell. But his price on the 365 was 21 shipped which included a hand full of screws.

I'm starting another thread with pictures of the inside of a 1012 with the HD card installed. You can see the BT module as well.
