The differences:
- new intel chipset and processor that will let the battery last longer (they say up to 9.5 hourse). the cpu is 10-20% faster, the graphics about 50% faster.
- the battery compartment now sits flush for the 6-cell (but reaches back father, instead of down)
- soon more options, though partly same as old mini 10 (the existing wwan, and tv options, but also broadcom decoder which lets you play hd, which for instance will allow youtoube hd properly)
- design has changed a bit

I guess those are the major points.

So if your main point is that the netbook should last as long as possible go for the 1012.

now for some of the bad points

the screen doesnt sit flush with the back of the unit, the unit actually extends past the end of the LCD, also the bottom looks very cheaply made, the unit is two colors, the bottom is white and the top is black or what ever color you chose, most options arent out yet, the SD card still sticks out..no eject button, the palm rest is now black, it has a VGA port and not an HDMI port..just thought you should know about some of the bad points too. I personally do not like the 1012, and will not give up my 1010, after upgrading the HD to 640gb, it does everything perfectly for me..

Dell Mini 10 (Obsidian Black 1010), 2gb RAM, 1.6ghz 533mhz FSB (Z530) processor,A10 BIOS, 750gb WD Scorpio Blue Hard Drive (5400rpm), Intel GMA 500 Integrated Graphics, TV Tuner, Bluetooth 2.1 module with EDR, 1.3mp Camera, 1366x768 HD Screen, Wireless 1510 b/g/n mini card, 6 cell (56WHr) Battery..every option except GPS (wasnt out yet), 4gb SDHC, 8gb Flashdrive, Targus Netbook Chillpad, Targus Sport Case, Windows XP Pro SP3 (98gb)/Windows 7 Ultimate (600gb) (Dual Boot)

Yes, the bad points should be considered too.
Most of them are just opinnions though.

There are only few points that I do not like:
- the display does not cover the whole length (sits flush to the back), that does not look nice
- it could be a bit thinner, other designs like eee seashell look flatter (but I doubt the real difference is much)

Points like options not being available yet... well, true if you really want/need them and cannot wait until they are available.

Well, its just a matter of opinnion if you do not like it that something sticks out or not.

Agreed, when you have other cables and whatnot attached it does not make much difference, but netbooks are meant to be carried around with you anyway, with only attaching things when you really need it, not always.

I have no problem with it sticking out a bit, but I agree that it would be nicer when it went futher in. It would look nicer and one less point on which the 'book can get cought on.

IMO, this was a bigger issue on the Mini 9 because a lot of users installed SD cards for use as secondary drives (permanent storage) because the SSDs were so small (4 GB, 8 GB, etc.). You can't really do that with an SD card that sticks out because you have to worry about knocking it out while moving the unit. Since most 10/10v users opt for a larger HDD, the need for extra permanent storage space is less acute.

Personally, I would still prefer that the SD card sit flush with the case, but it bothers me a lot less on my 10v than it would have on my 9. I rarely use the card reader for more than a few minutes at a time to transfer files to/from the HDD. However, on my 9 it is the permanent home for all of my documents and a few portable apps, so having it flush is much better.

I just sold my 10v because I didn't like the narrow viewing angles. (Narrow for me, that is.)

Does the 1012 make any improvements to the screen?
