Default Possible to repartition for OS X and save Factory XP install - 06-08-2009, 05:20 PM

I am getting my 10V today and want to keep an XP install and dual boot for OS X. Anyone know if i can re partition the disk with a nice large FAT32 shared storage area so I can install OS X without having to wipe the drive clean?

Default Ghost it! - 06-09-2009, 06:07 PM

Yes, it can be done, but not without "wiping" the drive. The easiest and most effective solution I've found is to make a complete image of a "virgin" drive with Ghost. IMHO, this is a good idea anyway - typically a Ghost restore takes minutes, whereas having to use the Dell OS CD's takes significantly longer to re-install the OS.

What I would do: Get a copy of ghost, put it on a large USB key, boot from that key, and make a compressed image of your SSD to the USB key. Then repartition with whatever tool you like. After that, boot off the Ghost USB key again, and put the OS and Dell Utility Partition (if there was one) back on the new smaller partitions. Then you'll have space of OS X.

I've found this setup to work very well for me, but your millage may vary. ;-)

Ghost is one the most valuable tools you can have, love it, use it all the time.

BUT, I have yet to try to create an OSX partition image using ghost, can it be done? I just got my osx disk today so I'm installing on a fresh 16GB SSD first, I'd like to grab it as an image then create a Win 7/ OSX and maybe Ubu partitions on my 64GB SSD when it comes in.

Default Use Ghost and Time Machine in Tandem - 06-10-2009, 03:09 PM

I have never gotten OS X to work with Ghost; usually, after I have made a ghost image of the virgin SSD, and then repartitioned the SSD to make room for OS X, and put windows back on the smaller partition, I then install OS X on the remaining space. Then I make a disk image of the newly installed OS X from within the OS X boot CD. Then, if I have to re-install OS X at a later date, I'll boot of the CD and use Time Machine to restore the image, and then run DellEFI to get the necessary boot loader in place.

This seems to work well for me - good luck!

I thought it might be something MAC specific for the image. Thanks for the info.
