Default various questions answered - 05-28-2009, 09:46 PM

I'm sitting behind a 10v at this moment. I ordered one on 5/13, and it was delivered today.

I've spent the last few hours attempting to install OSX on it -- no luck so far. It boots into the installer happily, and then wants to upgrade from an earlier version. The same OSX install flash drive was used to install on 2 mini 9's without issue. I'm not sure what is going on here, and real work needed doing, so I had to abandon the effort.

AFAICT, there is no fan.

The LCD appears to be LED backlit, based on it having 12 brightness settings. Yes, 12.

I got the base model ( 120 GB Sata, Ubuntu, Black, No bluetooth).

I didn't play much with Dell's ubuntu -- but it looked to have some other flash player, based on the first boot.

The black shell shows fingerprints pretty badly -- not a deal breaker for me, but a bit annoying.

I'm 6'2", and am used to ergo keyboards, so, for my talons, the keyboard is a bit cramped and uncomfortable by comparison. However, it is quite a bit easier for me to use than the mini 9 keyboard.

The Wall Wart I got will block a lower outlet -- the mini 9 warts I've seen don't do that.

I'm currently running ubuntu 9.04 - netbook remix, which runs quite well. (Properly identifies 2 cpu's, etc).

Haven't really played with network stuff -- wireless is flaky at work. Wired works fine.

The screen looks fine -- no complaints from me. However, for performing and OSX install, I had to activate an external monitor before booting into the installer, else the lower buttons on the install dialog get cut, and you can't get to them.

Thus far, I'm quite pleased -- I'd buy another.

The trackpad is not the same as the mini 9 -- the left/right buttons are under the pad, which can cause the pointer to go all over the place, if you aren't used to it.

Thanks for the info Dante.

Any info on if this will handle a 2 gig memory stick (have you tried upgrading the ram)??

Anyone know off the top of their head....does the Mini 9 use a LCD for the screen or is it a backlit LED like the 10v?

Anthonymobile reported his Mini10(v) only having 9 brightness levels but I guess this depends on how you count...I usually count how many times I press brightness Up/Down from min/max or 15 key presses on my Mini...

I would hazard a guess that any more than 7 key presses may be a good indication of whether the Mini10(v) display is LED although researching the hardware ID or even better yet would be disassembly to be 100% sure that it is equipped with superior LED display as opposed to old-school CCFL if Dell went the cheap route...

just got mine 15 minutes ago! i got the XP one, so im currently uninstalling all the crapware. in addition to what somms said, i'd just add that the keyboard feels a little more clickety-clackity than i expected, but its not too bad.

the trackpad/buttons are going to take a little practice, but ill get it soon.

still havent played around with a whole lot yet. i'll see if i can find out about the ram upgrade shortly.

I started at 1, and then incremented by 1 for every time I pushed the brightness button.

If I just count how many times I push the button, there are 11.

It appears to behave differently on battery power than it does when plugged in.

The level does't take effect very quickly, so if someone were not paying close attention, they may hit the button multiple times and perceive 1 level of brightness change.

how did you rip the palmset off?

also, with the netbook facing up, which side is the display connector?

Too bad Compal left the WWAN connector off the motherboard again on the Mini10(v) just like they did onMini9/10!
