The round thing with the two wires? That's the button cell battery that powers the CMOS. The battery itself doesn't make noise but maybe there's something under it or near it that does. I've noticed that noise, too, very faintly and it comes and goes.

Man that makes me nervous the idea of a noise like that. The last thing I want is a 500 dollar high pitched box.

Actually, I've noticed that the noise is coming from the speakers. I actually took the left one out (while still connected) and held it up to my ear. The whining/whistling noise goes away once the speakers are unplugged. Any idea? It's got to be interference somewhere. I've ordered another Mini, and I'm going to return this one. I hope it doesn't have the same problem.

I have an annoying noise when the system starts. It stops immediately when I the WLAN card in the device manager disable. Is that the problem? Or is it another problem?

I have recently purchased the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 and the answer is, yes it does make some noise. There is a high pitched noise that continually comes and goes and is quite annoying. I have read one or two reports regarding this by other Mini 10 owners, but the cause of the noise seems unidentified. Apart from that, I am very pleased with it.

I have a dell mini 10v with an ssd. I hear the whining too so it's not coming from hard drive. I just started noticing it after about 2 months. I could have just been oblivious beforehand though. I was just afraid something was loose.
