Default Ubuntu 12.04 desktop on Dell Mini 1010 - 05-07-2012, 07:59 AM

I have a question, on my Dell Inspiron Mini 1010 I've got Ubuntu 10.10 netbook version and it works reasonably well, together with the Poulsbo drivers for the screen resolution.

But as not every program works well, I have a question, someone advised me to install and/or upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 desktop.
I know the minimal requirements for Ubuntu 12.04 are:
Reasonably functioning:
Processor: Pentium 4, 1,3 Ghz
RAM-memory: 1 GB
VGA: 64 MB
Harddisk space: 8 GB

Well functioning:
Processor: Pentium 4, 2 Ghz
RAM-memory: 1,5 GB
VGA: 128 MB
Harddisk space: 10 GB

Well, my harddisk is 143.8GB meaning I have sufficient space, my RAM-memory functions at 875.2MB now, so it may be 1GB, the Intel Corporation System Controller Hub (SCH Poulsbo) Graphics Controller (rev 07) has a memory of 128MB and the processor is the Intel (R) Atom CPU Z530 @ 1,6GHz (comparable with a Pentium 4, 1 or 2 GHz??).

Is this possible on this small laptop, without any problem and then what about the screen resolution, does Ubuntu 12.04 support this chip or do I still need new Poulsbo drivers - do they comply with Ubuntu 12.04?

Thanks for your advice.

I'm running ubuntu 12.04 on my 1010 currently, and it is working well.

I had been running 10.04 ... I had a couple installs ... the first time I had the EMGD drivers, but tried to upgrade to 11.xx at some point and hosed the system, and reinstalled 10.04, but couldn't find the instructions for the EMGD drivers anywhere, so I installed the PSB drivers as outlined at the ubuntu hardware support site. I can't post links yet, so google "HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardPoulsbo"

From what I gather, the PSB drivers work fine, but don't support compiz under 10.04, and I can't live without transparent terminals, so eventually, I tried once again to install 11.10 (should have done 10.10 or 11.04), but installed the "testing" version of EMGD, which got me nowhere, so I upgraded the distro to 12.04.

The kernel module is built in, so you don't have to install any drivers later.

It does not do 3d, but it does support transparency for terminals and such, so I am happy. Youtube videos and mp4 play fine also, even though hardware acceleration is not present.

That being said, if your 10.10 is not broken, think about why you want to upgrade ... It looks like 1010 has pretty full support of the gma500, whereas 12.04 is still a work in progress ... though very good progress.

There is a lot of controversy over the unity interface in 12.04. I like it, but others don't like where ubnutu is going with this. Maybe do a live boot off a usb stick first and see if it works for you.

Thanks Ted1010, I indeed did a live boot off a usb stick, but it did not look well, half of my screen was Ubuntu 12.04 (the upper half) but the other (under) half was the screen of the terminal. What is the problem now?
Better to burn 12.04 on CD and then try?
Thanks for your advice.

Well Ted1010, I burnt the 12.04 desktop i386 iso on CD, have the CD controlled for errors or failures, CD has been burnt without problems without failures, was the result.

But when trying 12.04 from CD I had the same screen problems as I had with the USB-stick. What is wrong, perhaps the so called poulsbo drivers, whatsoever, or something else, could it mean my Dell 1010 cannot bear the 12.04 version perhaps?

Is it very risky now to install 12.04 without testing, meaning I will lose everything (I don't have personal things anyway)??

Please come back with your reply or please let another person, with experience, reply.

Where did you get the info that GPU works with 128MB shared memory?

I installed Lubuntu 12.04 on Mini 1010 the other day, works with some minor tweaks.

Read here:
Ubuntu 12.04 gma500 (poulsbo) boot options | Shadows of epiphany

I used this:
Log in , then, using any editor, open /etc/default/grub
Change the line – GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet console=tty1 acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux mem=896mb"
And then update grub
sudo update-grub
And finally reboot.

The reason because I installed Lubuntu over Ubuntu is that Lubuntu uses LXDE and it is ligweigt. I wanted to use it as Media center with XBMC, but video playback in HD does not work well.

I found one interesting OS with embedded all drivers (Poulsbo works out of the box). Jolicloud - Joli OS
Joli OS is cloud OS based on Ubuntu.

Join me in my request for Mini 1010 bios mode here:
Unlock request: Dell Inspiron Mini 10 (1010) - GPU memory locked to 8MB only

I want to have configurable GPU shared memory in BIOS, and overclock option too.
