Default SMART Failure predicted on hard drive - 01-05-2012, 02:43 PM

Hi there - first time poster so please be kind....

I'm getting a message similar to this at start up:

"SMART Failure predicted on hard diskback up your data a failure is imminent."

Gave it to one of our techy guys at work who has looked at it, and tried to rescue the data on the HDD which it (almost) did apart from the final 10%. But when he tried installing the brand new HDD that I'd bought it wouldn't let him complete the task. He thinks its a power issue that has caused the HDD to be damaged and that is also preventing him from installing the new HDD. Anyone out there have similar problems? Is it dead or is there one last (economically viable) hope? Any help apprieciated. Thanks.

B.

if you get the SMART error, your drive is on the way out, its happened to me too, I replaced the drive and all was good....nothing to do with power....at least in my case, maybe you got a bad replacement...

PS. Welcome to the forum...

Hi there and thanks for your reply.

My guy at work tells me that the new HDD is all good - nothing wrong there - which led him to the conclusion that the fault lay elsewhere. I'm almost resigned to the fact that it's dead and that I should really just go ahead and buy a new netbook. Just thought I'd reach out one last time in the hope that someone somewhere had had the same problem.

2 things, one try a 3rd hard drive to eliminate that, then also check the BIOS and see if the HD is recognized there correctly
