You could boot off a Linux LiveCD or LiveUSB (like SystemRescueCD) and see what SMART errors are reported.
To examine SMART data under Linux, run the following commands in a terminal:
"sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda" should print "all" SMART data about the primary hard drive.
"sudo smartctl -l error /dev/sda" will just print the error log.
You can also attempt to copy data off the drive, if needed.
