Default Dell Mini 10 - First Thoughts - 01-09-2009, 04:13 PM

News certainly travels fast!

For those of you who have not seen it already take a look at http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/d...nches-mini-10/ for the latest news about the unvailed Dell Mini10.

Features it boasts to be coming with:
1) A 10" 720p Screen
2) A built in tv tuner
3) Built in 3G (hopefully actually with a connection soldered in on this one!)
4) GPS
5) Multi-touch support
6) Atom Z530 CPU
7) A keyboard which stretches right up to the edges

So what are your thoughts and any guesses at when it will be avaible and pricing?

EMOB444

EDIT:

I seems so wierd to be saying the Dell Mini 10!

Sure doesn't look like an edge-to-edge screen in the photo--there's clearly a thick black boarder around it.

I wonder what we can take from the 10 and put it into the 9. A keyboard and track pad swap would be cool... but that's just me dreaming

Here are my questions on the 10:
  • Battery life/cell size[/*:1ixxohw5]
  • Linux compatibility - Definitely would want GPS, TV Tuner, 3G et al to function in ubuntu (unknown if it will be offered oem)[/*:1ixxohw5]
  • Upgradeability - mini12 has RAM soldered to the main board[/*:1ixxohw5]
  • Storage - I actually would prefer SSD over HD[/*:1ixxohw5]
  • Price - I would pay maybe $500 for a decently kitted mini10[/*:1ixxohw5]

I would sell my 9 and get a 10 right away, but I doubt too many people are interested in a 4GB model, so I would have to upgrade the SSD, and then what's the point of dropping even more money on a marginally better product?

Probably not much. Although the design aesthetic is very similar, I doubt it goes much beyond that. Maybe SSD and/or RAM? The keyboard on the 10 will almost certainly be far too large for the 9 - not only is it a 10" netbook, but the mini 10's keyboard appears to be edge-to-edge. As far as other internal stuff... doubt there is room to pull the tuner from a 10 and put it in a 9.

Looks like my new Mini 9 may be going back to Dell since its within the 21 day return period.

I like the 720p screen and the keyboard layout. Hopefully there will be some more details forthcoming in the next week so I can make an informed decision.

Considering I was going to buy a RunCore 32g SSD for my Mini 9, the additional $ should cover the cost for a 10. Just need to see if it stays with the SSD. Don't know if I'd buy one with a regular HD.

(edited to add thoughts on SSDs)

Second Thought - I wonder how much I can sell my Mini 9 for (outside the return date for Dell), if my Runcore SSD and 2GB ram can be transferred over. So quick to switch, but the ideal of a multi-touch trackpad, just begs for OS X, which is probably my favorite thing about my Mini now.
