Cool New User, upgrade options? - 03-21-2010, 05:47 AM

Hi all, just discovered the forum & have been browsing for a little while. Good stuff.

I have a Mini 10 w/ 1GB, Z520@1.33GHz, running XP

I would like to run Photoshop as smooth as possible to avoid heading to the basement whenever I need to mess with some art. I'm also interested in dual booting OSX.

What are my upgrade options with this mini 10? I'd really like 2GB ram but I see that's a tall task to find a DB replacement. Other things I've though about adding are GPS, internal USB Hub, relocating my mouse receiver into the case, I would love to sawp in a Wireless N card if possible. I don't have or really want/need bluetooth right now. The battery needs replacing soon, I thought about trying to have it rebuilt at a local battery shop but haven't checked in on that yet. I'd like a 6-cell but I use the mini at work occasionally & it fits nicely into my clipboard w/ a 3-cell.

Lofty goals indeed & I wonder if I should go through with them on this machine or look for another possible better platform to start with. The only Netbook frame I like to date is the Dell Mini series, I absolutely have to have a traditional style trackpad w/ buttons on the bottom. The size of the 10 is about perfect for portability & ease of use, I don't think I'd want anything smaller.

Father of 2 already with another on the way so I'm going at it on a limited budget. I've become decent at moving things around on Craigslist & doing some disc golf art/dye's to fund my hobbies for wife approval

There is a low cost battery option some have discussed in the hardware thread, a little modification and you can get a 6-cell battery at a closeout price at Walmart. A few owners have also upgraded the hard disk.

Not sure if the 1010 is Photoshop friendly though. I checked the minimum system requirements for Photoshop Elements 8 and it was 2mb of RAM, I also don't think the processor was powerful enough. If you go back a couple of generations of PS or PSE, it might work. I have Photoshop CS2, but I do not even think that will work on the 1010, I might still have a version 10 disk.

Right now I use Paint.net. Not as many automated filters, but if I can get the basic correction and unsharp mask down, it will work with photography. With audioligy and windows movie maker, I have also been able to try audio and video editing, albeit at a basic level (I only need web quality). Need to play with it on the road to really see how well it works.

Not a whole lotting of modding options for the 1010, but if you hack the system enough, use the flash 10.1 beta 3 with win7, you can get slight increases in performance. Internet Explorer 9 will also use GPU acceleration for web browsing in the not too distant future. Good luck, post a note in here if you find any more options.

I'm leaning heavily toward giving the 1010 to my wife & picking up a mini 9 for myself to mod up.

I love my Mini 9, but it doesn't use standard drives. You need a expensive, low-capacity SSD made especially for the Mini 9.

Doesn't bother me, 'cause I'm happy with my stock 4GB SSD, but if you're ambitious, a newer, larger netbook that takes standard laptop drives may be a better choice. For example, your old 10, the 10v and the new 10 (model 1012) all take standard laptop drives.

Yeah I noticed that, I'm looking at a 64Gig SSD & using a 320Gb Passport for storage.

I think that is the best route. I am going to use the 1010 for awhile and pick up another mini when an upgraded processor/ram combination is available.

Hi all, just discovered the forum & have been browsing for a little while. Good stuff.

I have a Mini 10 w/ 1GB, Z520@1.33GHz, running XP. To go with what I have added below do you have and HDMI port on your machine?

I would like to run Photoshop as smooth as possible to avoid heading to the basement whenever I need to mess with some art. I'm also interested in dual booting OSX. The mini 10 is not able to run OSX unless you meant 10v. Also for light editing have you ever looked into GIMP its great and you can also get it in a portable version and run if off a thumbstick to save HDD/SSD space

The Mini 10 ram is NOT upgradeable. If you do add an internal USB hub please make a tutorial because I and other would be very interested.

Yes the trackpad is quite a pain in the a$$, there are a few guides on here of people who have done a few improvements on the trackpad. I also like the idea that you have a plan before jumping in.

I've become decent at moving things around on Craigslist & doing some disc golf art/dye's to fund my hobbies for wife approval . I hear you on that, father of an 8 month old and I can say diapers are expensive and grandmothers are great LOL
