Default DVD Region Free Questions - 01-15-2010, 02:54 PM

I have a Mini 1010 with the Dell External USB DVDRW Drive, Model GX10N, LGE-DMGX10N(B).

I want to be able to be able to make my system “Region Free” for the purposes of watching DVD from regions outside of the US.

My understanding is that typically the DVD Drive has a firmware counter that locks the region eventually. Does anyone know if this is the case for the drive I have? and if it does how can I change it?

Also, when I check the region code using properties in windows it shows I have 4 changes left before it locks. How do I change this so that the counter does not cycle down or how do I get windows to be region free. My windows system is XP.

Any advice or links you can provide would be appreciated.

I don't think you can reset the counter - it is in the drive's non-volatile RAM. It's the drive you have to somehow change to be region-free.

I have not seen a discussion of that in this forum. Do a web search for that drive's model number and you might find something.
