I have a couple questions and/or tips.

What is the resolution/format of the video? If it's a DVD, DVD .iso or MPEG (.mpg, .ts, etc), then you may need to play with deinterlacing/pulldown removal settings. It looks like low-resolution/deinterlacing problems on the brim of Woody Harrelson's hat.

Try playing the video on a different computer. Make sure the Mini's the problem, not the video.

I hope this info helps you.

First off, I'd classify a 256 pixel tall video as very low quality. So, the video will never look great. But we can still try to improve it a little, and/or understand why it looks better on the Acer.

What's the resolution of the screen on the Acer and on your Mini? If the Mini has a better screen (particularly in resolution), it will accentuate the flaws in low quality videos. If your playback software supports it, adding a filter, like blur, denoise, or smooth, may improve the look of the video.

When I play mediocre videos on a good computer and screen with Mplayer, I'll frequently employ the hqdn3d (high quality denoise 3D) filter to smooth out some of the ugly spots. VLC probably has a similar option somewhere in the menus, but I don't know how well it works on a weak CPU (Atom).

Good luck.

The video card, the GMA500 inside our Mini, doesn't support well overlay video. It is a very old technology, superseeded by various new video rendering systems, but the problem is that most of programs under Xp will use it for default. So you have to configure them to output video using VMR9, DX9, DirectX, it depends on your program. Vlc, or mplayer classic home cinema can do this trick.

Hi
you can find the option in video tab of vlc preferences
from menu select: tools > preferences > video > video output
