Default Additional Runcore SSD in Mini 10? - 10-05-2009, 01:03 AM

Hey guys,

I'm completely new to this topic (as well as to this forum, hi there!), so please forgive me my possibly stupid question.

Would it be possible to equip the Mini 10 with an additional MiniPCI-e SSD (That is, leaving the HD installed and putting the OS the SSD)?

Somehow I can't resolve this question clearly from earlier posts, but since none has apparently done this so far, I guess it's not possible. Are there no additional slots, or would it be possible to get rid of the TV-Tuner card and put in a Runcore SSD for example?

Cheers
Georg

I don't know the details of the 10, but the 10v has no room for another drive. In fact, most laptops don't have room for 2 HDDs. My Everex does, but it is a rarity.

Likely your answer is no, but someone who has been inside a 10 should chime in soon.

Mini PCIe SSDs don't tend to use standard Mini PCIe pin layouts. They need specially wired slots. It's not a simple matter to get one working in a regular slot.

Since the Runcores have USB, you could get it working via a internal USB relatively easily, but USB only operates at a fraction of the SSD's speed.

I do like that kind of thinking, though! Is it an issue of room or speed?

I didn't mean to put in another 2.5" drive. The idea was to use one of the possibly three MiniPCI-e Slots. According to Dell, a TV-Tuner, WWAN and WLAN card can be installed. Somehow the Dell phone support is not willing to tell me if there are 3 usable slot installed by factory, or if you could exchange e.g the DVB module with an SSD.

Is that sure? Somehow I can't find much information about this matter. The PCI-e standard doesn't really tell anything about different wirings, but of course that doesn't prevent Dell from doing this, or disabling certain devices. RunCore hasn't answered my support request so far.

Speed. Would be nice to have the OS and programs on the fast SSD and data on the HDD (wich you could shut down to save power).

Booting from an SD card in the slot would get you off of the platters, but I'm not at all sure how much extra battery that might save .

As your title states, "additional," and "another" are usually interchangeable in the English language....

Thanks for this brilliant and enlightening language course, Downer.

I'm sure you are aware of the fact that SSD != 2.5" drive, aren't you?
(which is actually the key point of this thread)

Apparently you're not aware of the fact that the Mini10/10v uses SSD drives in a 2.5" form factor, which is the source of the confusion.

Regardless, there is only one mini SATA connector for a HDD inside and even if there were another, there is no room in the chassis for another drive. Maybe if you soldered a different connection onto the WAN slot it might work, but I doubt you could find a SSD small enough to fit into that space.
