Default Mini 10 - 08-14-2009, 03:32 PM

Not entirely sure if anyone has noticed this but heres a link apparently there is a Mini 10 now with the Z processor with 2 gb of ram.

The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

So, im thinking about buying either a mini 10 or a mini 10v and b/c of this new mini 10 with 2 gb of ram it has me torn.

As for the mini 10 with the 2 gb of ram you can get the HD screen resolution, bluetooth and wireless N options but you are stuck with a 5400 rpm drive, though if i go this route i plan on getting a SSD from newegg. My question is would i be able to get a TV Tuner card from dell afterwards or is it like the mini 9 where the molex connector for the slot is just missing. Or does the mini 10 have the pci express connectors on the board for upgradeability later?. Or is the tv tuner garbage? Also, since this model has 2 gigs or ram on it will the performance hit with the gma 500 + Z processor still be on the poor side as opposed to a gma950 + N280.

I have no plans of putting osx on it, im not a mac guy however i do plan on running windows 7.

I can care less about the HDMI port since i rarely use it now on my precision m6400 through displayport dongle. Though the high res screen is a selling point for me but im a bit more of a performance as opposed to battery life kind of person. Or is it just worth it to get a 10v.

Any opinions would be great, thanks!

well i guess thats it lol, that screen res really had my interest but if the performance is a heck of alot better on the mini 10v ill go with that. I had a Mini 9 but i ended up giving it away to a family member in need of a pc. I was pleased with its performance minus the keyboard, i just really couldnt adjust to it. I even swapped out the keyboard for an Int-Eng and didnt do it for me either.

I did get a chance to play with a Latitude 2100 and the keyboard was really comfy for typing. So thats what sold me on a 10 inch netbook as opposed to a mini 9. Thanks for the input though =)

2 gig ram and high res screen is the right way to go imho. I did a clean install of windows with no crapware, but even so, after installing my apps and devices, the memory goes. 1024 width is becoming too narrow for some websites so the high resolution means no horizontal scrolling.

The TV tuner works, but I don't have too much downtime during the day to watch it and at home I'm watching the big tv. It will be handy when the electricity goes out or if I have to wait for jury duty. Being picky, but the need for the antenna is a bit of a bummer. Would be nice if a tv tuner antenna could have been built into the screen.

What amazes me of the in the whole netbook phenomena is that intel's graphics is slow. Just browsing the web is graphically intensive and scrolling is not as smooth as it should be. I don't play games, but better graphics would be nice.

It looks like they've upgraded the Mini 10 to Windows Vista: however, if you want Windows 7 I'd wait until it actually releases, just because last I checked it was ineligible for the free upgrade to Windows 7 Basic.
One bonus for this: the systems in the Outlet with XP will drop in price. Yay, XP being cheap and compatible with most everything. :P

Received lowest quality mini 9 with 512 megs RAM, 4 GB SSD. Additions:
-2 GB RAM
-4 GB SSD [2 GB SD Card: getting 16 GB SDHC]
Sold for $180 so I could buy Mini 10, XP/Ubuntu, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, 1366x768 screen, 6-cell for $260.
[Extra screen space IS AMAZING, as is having a working keyboard]

Notice that the price of a HD display upgrade has gone up to $75?

yes for this upgraded mini 10 yes i did notice the hike on the prices. Though i dunno ive read so much crap on the N vs Z atom chips and for what i would be using the laptop for would be mainly for work purposes. Lugging around a precision m6400 in a disaster area trying to fix a router or something sort of sucks. Plus i really hate to bang up this covet and its near impossible to work in a tight area with this thing. I dont need the mini to play games or anything of the sort. Maybe a little bit of hulu desktop on low/med quality while i do some research or something would be nice.

As ive stated in a previous post i really was happy with the mini 9's performance and the mini 10v looks to match that pretty well. Its just the fact knowing theres another model 10 that has a higher res screen that would drive me nuts. And from everything ive read about the n vs z processors everything reads to just go with the N b/c of performance issues on the z but every thing i have read about it and the 10 is b/c of the 1 gig of ram in it. Id just really hate to drop all that cash and just find out that the extra gig of ram in it is worthless.

For windows 7 im not really to worried about it and i wouldnt want the basic version anyway (3 windows open would not work for me, i usually have more than that open and my mini 9 i had a few months ago, had no problems or yelled at me) i would have to buy 7 pro to fit my needs for work, or get spec an extra license in the volume licenses when my company eventually upgrades to 7 enterprise.

Also, does base mini 10's have the pci slots on the motherboard or does dell scrap the connectors like they did on the mini 9's w/o the mobile broadband cards. And lastly does the mini 10 have a fan and the mini 10v does not? or do they both have fans?

Sorry for the barrage of questions im just trying to piece together info from both sides of these boards to make a decision as to which mini 10 would fit my needs. You guys have been most helpful so far =)

From what I've heard, neither Mini has a fan [not the 9 nor the 10].
Also, Windows 7 has like 50 different types. You're thinking of Windows 7 Starter I meant the next level up. Nobody wants Starter. :P
As for the RAM ... it depends. I can only speak from personal experience with a Dell Mini 9, but when I upgraded from 512 to 2 gigs, I got a small performance boost, but nothing really major. I do a lot of multitasking/massive tabs things, and ... I don't think the jump from 1 to 2 gigs is all that big a deal, since most things will be CPU or graphics-limited.
Seriously, if I needed a replacement right now, I'd get a Mini 10 with 6-cell and HD screen for $300. I'm waiting for a coupon, though, because I can't spend $200 on a laptop when I already have a 9 [I'd be giving my brother the 9 for $100-ish]. Well, I can't justify it to myself really.
I really do want that keyboard though. Maybe I'll convince myself somehow. :P
I found this
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_look...20+%40+1.33GHz
then presumably
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_look...30+%40+1.33GHz
This tells you the difference between the 520 and 530. [If you're curious: one's score is 253, the other's is 296. Rule of thumb: Z520>2 gig Celeron, <2.13 gig celeron. Z530>2.6 gig celeron and less than 2.53 gig celeron [for whatever reason].]

Here

disagrees with me RAM-wise.
I'm far too lazy to hyperlink.

ha, yah i feel you on that keyboard thing with the 9, i really tried to train myself on it but i kept hitting all the wrong keys and it made me use the thing less and less. My boss recently got a latitude 2100 and i played around with the touch screen and tried out the keyboard a bit and it was like night and day.

As nice as the 2100 (rugged as well, i think hes dropped it like 3 times in the first 2 weeks he had it) its just too bulky of a netbook. I really was not impressed with the touchscreen either just too small of a screen and the responsiveness wasnt there. Ive played with a latitude xt a touchscreen on that makes absolute sense as you can swivel the screen around but you cant do that with the 2100. So in my model decision process the 2100 was definately out.

I love how slim the mini series netbooks are.

Well i decided on going with the mini 10, after reading some positive posts on the newer gma 500 drivers for win 7 that was a plus for me. That and that higer res screen. I ended up picking up a ssd from newegg to replace the HDD too. Hopefully when i get this new mini 10 with the onboard 2gb of ram it will perform alot better than the 1gb version. Now if anyone has a dell part number for the tv tuner i think that would be my next purchase =)
