Default Mini10 harddrive upgrade?? 7200rpm? - 07-31-2009, 02:17 PM

Has anyone swapped out to a higher speed drive - 7200rpm? I assume it is a standard 2.5" notebook harddrive so other than increased power usage would think this would be a no-brainer upgrade. Any issues? Thanks. Pete

Yup, just about any 2.5" SATA HDD will work; "regular" or SSD. Also, if you do some research before buying you'll find that there are some 7200 rpm drives out there that are very miserly on power, better than many 5400 rpm drives. Tomshardware is a good place to look for reviews.

Someone here tried it last week and said the noise was enough to switch back to a 5400rpm drive.

Yea, some of them can be noisy. But some 5400's can be too. One of the Mini 10's I got from the Outlet had a 5400 rpm HDD so noisy it sounded like the computer had a cooling fan.

My Mini10 is on order. Since I can't upgrade the memory (did not realize that prior to ordering), I figure a faster harddrive will help.
Thanks all.

Every Little bit helps. If your not concerned about HD space.. Look into an SSD as that will speed you up alot.

I read a blog that was written back in May? I think it was that someone took the daughter board of the 10v and put it in the 1010, and that allowed him to upgrade his ram. But im not sure on the validity of this just because, since i haven't taken mine apart and compared the 1010 and the 10v that if that would even be possible.

I think there is a thread on here somewhere that also mentioned that we should be able to Buy Daughter cards that should allow upgrades on the 1010. But that could be all rumor too....

Does anyone have any experience of the following 7200rpm drive?

"120 GB Samsung HM121HJ Spinpoint MP2, 2.5", SATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm, 16MB Cache, 11 ms, NCQ
"

Looks like it could be a good economical option for my 10v...

Did more Reading and Found using the 10v board I dont think would be possible.

But anyways a 7200 RPM drive defiantly cant hurt. I saw Toshiba now has a 1TB 7200 RPM 2.5in drive now.. Im sure its a pretty Penny though.

Default Faster HD - 08-03-2009, 10:07 PM

I have a Seagate 160gb 7200 drive in my 10v & 1010, made no great difference in either. No problems with noise though. SSD drive can speed things up a bit depending on it's specs.

Super-capacity 2.5" drives (like Western Digital's 750GB and 1TB models) are 12.5mm tall, so they won't work in most laptops, which expect a 9.5mm tall drive. (I expect Toshiba's is the same height as WD's)
